I have a .12ga 870 Mag with 21" VR RC Express Turkey Barrel (24615). Tried various loads and chokes and thanks to the article in 2014 March AmericanHunter (Page 68) I have finally found the cats-meow (3" Win Long Beard XR 5's.)
The article states 75 holes in a 10" circle with 5's and an astonishing 147 holes with 6's at 50 yards. Pushing the limit out to 60 yards. 5's averaged in the 60's and 6's in the 70's.
Finally located some 5's online at Cabela's and went to the range today. Holy shit what an awesome round with Rem Turkey Extra Full choke.
Took pictures of the targets, but impossible to see the amount of destruction without magnification of the Long Beard XR's. Therefore didn't upload.
Tested four rounds today at 40 yards on a standard size turkey head target, with 3" shells & 5 oz load, supported from a bench. The following is the order of the test:
1. Win Long Beard XR Payload= 1 3/4 oz ---- too many to count with at least 20 fatal
2. Federal Premium Payload= 2oz ---- 20 on target with 5 fatal
3. Hornady Hvy Mag Payload= 1 1/2 oz ---- 12 on target with 3 fatal
4. Rem Premier High Vel Payload= 1 3/4 ---- 25 on target with 5 fatal
Yes they all have fatal hits, but the Win Long Beard XR is just so friggin awesome.
