I want to play around with support side aiwb carry of a fixed blade. I am not a big guy so thinking something the size of a mini pentagon. Problem is I am looking for something that has a decent sheath and is easily obtainable and not over the top in cost (under $150, under $75 optimal). Also looking for something that can easily be clipped aiwb without much rigging or fuss. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

ESEE Izula or Izula II which has slightly longer scales.

I carry mine in my back pocket behind my wallet, some carry in front pocket.

It can be attatched to belt with tec lock or para cord.

Handle can be para cord wrapped but I really prefer he scales, I dyed mine black for uniform wear.

There are some other after market scales/handles available also but they are more expensive.

for relatively the same cost you can get an awesome custom from many different knife makers. check out bladeforums knifemakers fixed blades for sale. many very cool knives put up there everyday.

Another vote for izula, candiru might be another option. Either way guys from ESEE are as top notch as they come. http://www.knifeworks.com/eseecutleryizulaneckknife.aspx

The blades suggested all seem to fit your described needs.

On the sheath, you may wish to take a look at Dark Star Gear. He's done several sheaths and a holster for me, and all have worked very well for their desired role.

Take a look at Shadow Tech Knives.

http://www.stknives.com/SHADOW_SERIES.html

I have a couple one offs from them. Nice knives at nice prices with solid usable sheaths. I usually make my own sheaths, not for the Shadow Tech blades.

I carry an Izula horizontally @ 11:00 everyday. It is a great knife for $50, and another $30 will get you some factory scales and a large Tek-Lok. I currently have more money in scales and a sheath than the knife cost, but I carry it everyday with enjoyment.

Try Bladerigs, contact Nick and let him know what you're looking for and he should be able to help you out.

Another vote for the ESEE-3, which I own, and use a lot. I also have a Bark River Gunny, which I prefer, but it is a little pricey. They also recently came out with a smaller version called the EDC.

The Ka-bar TDI small model that comes with ankle sheath is pretty small. I got one and the belt attachment. It would be a cheap way to see if you like the idea and placement.

It's right at the top of your budget but I have been very happy with my Spartan Blades Enyo for the past several weeks. OPTactical had them on sale last time I checked.

This is such a huge field and this has so many ways of approach.

I have a buddy who is putting together some custom blades w/ sheaths for a few different ways of carry. Once he gets them production ready (after I T&E the shit out of them) I'll post it up.

For now, you can look at bladerigs - and if that's too expensive for you, find a boker coye, comes with a pretty decent kydex sheath and there are aftermarket sheaths out there that may work for you.

A buddy of mine custom wrapped a few, they come with a pretty hefty handle out of the box.

I second the recommendation of the Boker Ridgeback. Armordillo Concealment makes a great sheath for it:

Just get a BK 14/ESEE (KaBar) and order scales to put on yourself. You will save yourself a lot of money and have all the knife you can use for a fraction of the price.

I have the Izula for an EDC knife, but will agree that the handle can be a drawback. Micarta scales can be an option for some, but as mentioned above, not for some others. I will be adding a Esee 3 Alumni knife to EDC backpack after their protective operations class next month. EDIT: Izula still is my favorite EDC knife it's hard to find a better knife that's as capable and as lightweight.

mbpike22
09-19-14, 07:04
That's a great knife mb. I edc an izula 2 and love the blade, but not the handle. I have tried paracord, the factory handle, TKC scales, nothing works for me with that knife. If I move up a size to a knife like the ESEE 3, it's too big to carry, for me at least. I am not a fan of folders, so for me it has to be fixed. I am still looking for my *almost* perfect knife!

I've really enjoyed the knife, before I got this knife I carried (and still do) a CRKT M16-14ZSF and it's been a hell of a knife. Locks up very solid, and has the double lock feature.

I believe you would really enjoy the Bear Grylls knives from Gerber. I have Gerber 31-001901 Bear Grylls Ultimate Pro Fixed Blade, Survival Knife with Sheath. It is extremely well made and incredibly tough. It comes with a nice solid lockable sheath. Full tang 3/16" blade.

The Izula is a great little knife- I love mine. I have used it to baton wood (not ideal but I was improvising and it worked) and prepare kindling. It held up great except for the blade coating coming off a bit which is not really an issue.

Hope that helps.

I'd like the sheath a lot better if I could alter the angle of it. I'd like to have the the blade parallel with my waistline. I carry the TDI at about 12 o'clock and at that angle I have to rotate my wrist a bit and I think if it were at a different angle my draw stroke would be a bit smoother.
