View Full Version : Recommend an inexpensive red dot

I just bought a Smith and Wesson M&P15-22 for my son and would like to put an inexpensive red dot on it. I'm looking at the Bushnell 1x25mm TRS-25 HiRise, but I've been reading mixed reviews about this optic.

Any feedback on the Bushnell will be greatly appreciated.

ETA: Saw the thread discussing the Primary Arms sight----how does it compare to the Bushnell if anyone has used both?

Thank you.

Can't help you on the Bushnell, but everything I've bought from PA has been top notch. They also stand behind their stuff. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one of their Micro Dots. I bought one as a throw away to see if I liked the smaller red dots and it's still going strong. Don't expet Aimpoint battery life and you won't be disappointed.

The trs-25 is more expensive and comes with too low of a mount. I would go with the PA with their lower 1/3 mount.

I've been using the TRS-25 on my MP15-22 for 2 years now without any problems. Usually on sale at Cabellas for $89 and a cheap chicom knockoff riser from a gun show and your in business.

Thank you for the replies. I just found out about the PA micros and it's making the decision even more difficult.... lol

I'll add that all the TRS-25's I've seen have been on rifles other than AR's. I've seen them on AK's, 10/22's, a Mini-14 (forward mounted on an Eotech rail), and on several SU-16's.

AFAIK, all are still working - but one of the AK's is the only rifle I know that has been used fairly extensively.

I've seen several of the PA micro's on AR's (5.56 and .22LR). All are still working AFAIK - but none have high round counts.

I've also seen several of the PA M3 and M4 style red dots on AR's. The M4 type PA red dot even went through a weekend class without failure (over 1,500 rounds fired).

IMHO, the best use of one of the 'cheap' red dots is on a .22LR AR - especially if you use an Aimpoint on your 5.56 AR.

If you do use normally an Aimpoint, I'd choose the PA red dot that most resembles it. The PA Micro if you use a T-1 or H-1, the PA M3 type if you use an Aimpoint CompM2 (or CompM3, or PRO),or the PA M4 type if you use a CompM4.

If you don't use an Aimpoint, then I'd go with the Micro - to save weight.

All just IMHO, and YMMV.

Thank you for the response.

I have two T-1s, both 4 MOA, and an Eotech XPS-2 on my M4s. This micro will be strictly for the M&P15-22. I just don't feel comfortable putting one of my T-1s on a rifle that will be used mostly by an 11 year old. Not at this point, anyway....

I have had the PA micro on an AK for well over a year and one on an MP 15-22 for about a year with no issues On the MP I'm using the PA riser that came bundled with it. The price was right and the quality seem good enough for a range toy.

I put a vortex raptor with Burris fastfire dovetail mount on my ruger mark iii.
Unbelievable. After changing out the guts for volquartzen works, the gun is beyond great.

I think the op moved on, a year and a half ago...."inexpensive red dot (https://www.m4carbine.net/google.php?cx=010536845846440650985%3Aridd3_u3s3i&cof=FORID%3A10&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=inexpensive+red+dot&sa.x=0&sa.y=0&siteurl=www.m4carbine.net%2Fforum.php&ref=&ss=4625j1437221j19)" yields a ton of threads.
