Just thought I would pass along some new info;

MI (Midwest Industries inc.) is/has released a Generation 2 version of their handguards (both free float and non free float).

The main upgrade/improvement is their new lighter weight. After some additional machining to the inside of the handguards they averaged a 15% drop in weight.

New Weights

MCTAR-17 (2 Piece Carbine Length)
MCTAR-17C (2 Piece Carbine Length ColtŠ Mfg. Guns)
Weight: 9.9 oz.

MCTAR-18 (2 Piece Mid Length)
Weight: 12.4 oz.

MCTAR-19 (2 Piece Full Length Rifle)
Weight: 16.0 oz.

MCTAR-20 (2 Piece Free Float Carbine Length Forearm)
Weight: 11.0 oz.

MCTAR-20X (2 Piece Free Float Extended Carbine Length Forearm)
Weight: 14.0 oz.

MCTAR-21 (2 Piece Free Float Mid Length Forearm)
Weight: 13.5 oz.

MCTAR-22 (2 Piece Free Float Full Length Forearm)
Weight: 17.1 oz.

MCTAR-24 (2 Piece Free Float Forearm 10" Length)
Weight: 14.7 oz.

The only model that not out as a Gen2 is the #17X and #17XC. But those should be ready in a few days. I will get us some weights on those also as soon as they are finished.

I will post up some pics also later today.

Thanks for looking!

This is excellent news Paul!

I'll be interested in a MCTAR-17C when my 6920 arrives but was wondering if they've made them narrower as well? The #17 I have now is very wide.

Same exterior dimentions. Just the machining on the underside of the handguard has changed.

Thanks!

Here is a picture of the underside of the handguard. (sorry for my poor picture taking ability)

Good deal, thanks for posting the pics. I think as the weight gap between standard CAR/M4 handguards and the various railed 2-piece options gets smaller and smaller, their popularity can only go up.

What's the quality of these rails compaired to say LaRue?

Larue doesn't make a 2 piece FF rail that I'm aware of, so it would probably make more sense to compare it to Samson or Troy.

I know LaRue doesn't make a 2 piece rail. What I'm saying is how does the overall quality of the rail stack up against a LaRue rail. From what I understand not all rails are created equal when it comes to being in spec and what not.

Excellent Paul! My only complaint about the otherwise excellent MI rail is the weight. The machine work is pretty damn near flawless for the price, and the fit for the ubiquitous TD vert grip is VERY nice.
