View Full Version : Zero being effected from 55 grain to 62 grain?

I have a two part question.

A co-worker and I were talking about this today. I normally shoot PMC for pinking almost exclusively because it's easy on the wallet and goes bang.

All my rifles including my "SPR" are zeroed using this ammo (16 inch, Middy system and 18 inch barrels, rifle system). Roughly how much of a change would there if I'm using a 50 yard zero? I've heard Grant talk about Magtech CBC 62 Grain being his favorite and I've got the urge to try it to see how the "SPR" likes it. What I don't like is I can only buy 1k rounds every other month or so and I'm out of .223 all together. Tried finding it in 500 rounds but can't unless its .47 or more a round. I really need to get in to reloading as I have about 3k pieces for .223/5.56 brass.

It's harder to find Magtech CBC 62 grain to start stockpiling it vs PMC and small concern of mine is keeping stock pile of two different grains. I hope to attend a magnification shooing course (using 1-4x) next month and while in talks with the instructor. I brought up about having some match ammo, he stated "while it would produce better groups, you won't always have access to match ammo will you? Shoot the 55 grain"

1) Roughly how much of a change would there if I'm using a 50 yard zero? from 55 grain 2900 fps to 62 grain CBC

2) For stockpile does anyone keep two different weights or just focuses on one weight for SHTF type scenarios

I'd guess less than an inch at 50.

I keep 77gr, 75gr, and some M855 (62 grain). Any realistic scenario isn't likely going to have me shooting 500 plus yards. So POI variances are negligible.

Understood, thanks for the input.

Your 77gr/75gr what are you buying manufacturer wise?

I figure I could just keep a dope card of the changes when going form 55 grain to 62 grain.

My 77s and 75s are all Handloads. Having a dope card is a good idea. Without knowing how hot the 62 Magtec is, it's hard to say for sure what poi to expect. But people seem to like its accuracy.

Agreed that the biggest variable will be they manufacturer.

I get different results between manufacturers of M855 which is what I mainly stockpile. And same with M193. With strictly plinking ammo (especially the .223) its all over the map. I bought a case of Wolf Gold for plinking, stinko accuracy. PMC Brass is weak but reasonably consistent. PMC X-tac M855 has enough juice, but it's just a tad dirty, and not particularly accurate. I try to zero with Federal M855 because that is what I hoard in bulk. Its not particularly accurate either, but good enough SHTF work.

I cannot afford the 77 grain stuff for frequent shooting so I try to use the bulk stuff so I know what to expect. "A man has got to know his ammo limitations."

When you say PMC bronze is weak, you are saying it is not loaded to 5.56 pressure, correct? I shy away from M855 because I have alot of steel at the house I shoot at.

If I wasn't handloading, I couldn't afford to stock 77 grain at the price it brings.

Remember when they sold the MK262 for something like $0.33 per round back when we joined here? Times don't always change for the better.

I wasn't even a 77 gr fan back in those days. I had stock piles of XM193.

Right, yet now the XM is regarded as risky crap by many. Back then it seemed to be what almost everyone shot when you could find affordable 5.56. Still have quite a bit, though not as much as I used to, and it never gave or gives me any problems.

What I did save almost all of is the 5.56 TAP the nice police officer fellow who referred this site to me after I was booted from ARF was kind enough to part with. Was at least smart enough to save most of that along with my Cabela's designated MKCL (aka MOD 1).

I can remember getting those 500 round boxes of XM193 for $89 delivered from ammoman. Never gave me any problems.
