I'm always on the lookout to convert old, antiquated equipment that was issued to me and turn it into something effective on the cheap. I've been a big fan of the M300/M600 series Surefires (I have 3 and 1, respectively) which are great lights but they go on my "expensive" rifles. After piecing together a cheap beater gun the other day, and having a sling/light requirement for my ARs, I was pretty disappointed at the 6P's performance. I've got about 5 of them, and they were decent in their day but technology has come a long way since then.

I have it mounted to an IWC SMC 1" Mount

I ordered my M61 drop-in from Malkoff's website on a Monday and got it on a Wednesday. Cost was $48 delivered. It comes neatly packaged with bubble wrap and invoices, but when it's all unboxed this is what you have.

The head is just a direct replacement for the OEM Surefire head. From the website:

This dropin was designed for rugged service from the ground up. It is fully potted to stand up to rough service and recoil.

This is the Malkoff Devices P60 style dropin with solid brass heatsink construction...The reflector offers a very nice balance between throw and spill. It is an outstanding room lighter and short to medium spotter. It was designed specifically for use in Malkoff MD2, Elzetta ZFL-M60, and SureFire 6P, 9P, 6Z, C2, C3, M2, G3, and G2 flashlights.

My opinion is if you already have a compatible light, this is a great upgrade and I'll be upgrading all of my 6Ps with this when funds allow. But I wouldn't go out and buy a Surefire 6P (or any of the other various lights it fits) and then buy the LED head. The 6P is still a big, heavy light and used Surefire LED lights are available for a little more than what you'll pay buying the 6P new and the LED head.

Edit: Just read Hizzie's review. Much better.

I do like Gene Malkoff's work a lot.

I have Malkoff LED's in all my Surefire shotgun lights. They have a night flood to them that illuminates a room well. Not as much throw as an incan, and they don't cut smoke as well either. But great for their specific tasks.
