We decided to film some DVD's, and in doing so we wanted to do something slightly different. We of course wanted to make the DVD's informative and enjoyable, so we decided to film them like a documentary, where you the viewer follow the students though a course, while also picking up some techniques and whys along the way. Of course this is un-charted territory for us so we hope we got it right.

There will also be what I call a no talking drill section where you don't have to watch the video again, fast forwarding it to see a particular drill. You'll just go to the drill section and click on what drill you want ie. (Tac-reload, Transitions, Positions etc.) and there will be no talking from us during the demos. Which is good because were running our sucks enough. However the real story is watching the students grow.

r,

Also we understand all the controversies and of course people have seen the threads about why certain instructors don't do videos etc.. etc... however like Chris said this is not a "look at me or replacement video" this is more the documentary.

This is in no way a alternative for actual training, We all know that just because you watch a video or read a book doesn't mean your now an expert. Nothing is more down and dirty, physical, demanding, realistic and in your face than actual training. This is meant to be a great reference tool and to get more people educated and involved in our community.

Sounds good! I'm into this kind of stuff.

I even bought the USMC marksmanship video set years back. Sometimes you can pick up a thing or two when you're watching stuff like this in the comfort of your home. Sometimes in class your focus is on digging sand out of your pants and wondering how many loaded mags you have on you.

Great... I can see it now. It's Friday night after a long week of the rat race. The wife and I have finally gotten the kids in bed, we get a bowl of popcorn, some drinks and relax on the couch. The wife is expecting some romantic chick flick. I click the remote and across the 50" Plasma TV is is Travis and Chris running drills; "Contact Front!!!"

BANG BANG BANG!!

"NOT THIS SHIT AGAIN!!!" she yells...

I end up sleeping on the couch with the dog yet another night. :D

Thanks fellas.

I didn't get to watch the video because I'm at work and don't want to draw too much bandwidth, but this sounds like a great way to supplement a class you've already taken. I took a pistol class a couple months ago and am sure I've forgotten some of the details, something like this would be a good way to focus on the drills you're doing and make sure you're continuing to practice correctly.

I particularly like the idea of a "drills" menu to jump directly to what you're wanting to see. Simple but brilliant.

So how do I get you guys out to OK? ;)

costa
06-06-08, 16:11
Arc, we were thinking of also including a home decorating DVD for the Lady's. The problem is it would be home decorating with an orange county coppers approach. Hell Travis and I can't figure out what pants we should wear so maybe that isn't a good idea, Pants, drapes, crown molding, it could all go bad. We'll think of something I'm sure.

have a good weekend,

Nice video. I will definitely get that DVD and attend one of your courses in the near future. Looks like a lot of fun.

Quick question, if we attend one of your courses do we have to bring our own ammo on the plane with us or can we buy them at the location?

costa
06-06-08, 18:15
Rich, it will depend where the course is. Some courses people are driving to the class so it's already with you. If It's a course where you're meeting us at, sometimes the range will cut you a deal and have it ready for you when you arrive like for example ATS. It's all a case by case basis. Pick where you want to train and then I can help you with the ammo concern, but I don't think you are allowed more then 10 lbs on a commercial air.

Chris & Travis:

My friend sent me the link to the trailer and my jaw dropped! I was greatly impressed with the quality of the video, both visuals and background audio including the musical score:o It was intense and it got me so amped that I headed out to the range the next day and spent my time practising Chris' speed reload. Talked to Magpul just this morning (10/02/08) about the DVD release. Apparently the production company that is producing them got hit in one of those recent hurricanes and their facilities were damaged. Release of the DVD may not come for a couple more weeks now.

FromMyColdDeadHand
10-09-08, 23:41
Magpul makes some great stuff, but the thing that they are best at making is

Suspense.

I saw FDE UBR stocks seemed to hit the distributors recently and I was hesitating until I saw Bravo sell out of them, so I grabbed one. I wasn't going to wait until they released them again. Not that hip on FDE, but I hate suspense.

If the DVD has the same production values as the teaser, my wife just might watch it.

I've watched the whole thing, even all the extras. Chris does most of the talking and it is really easy to watch. When the students screw-up Chris will start yelling at them, but the students start laughing. The people taking the class look like they are having a lot of fun.

I wonder if those were real students or if they were picked? Students use everything from an AK with iron sights to a suppressed M4 with a S&B short dot. The classes seem pretty small too.

Makes me want to take a class.

I enjoyed the set and, as others have said, for the money it is a great buy. It was a good move to highlight the students in the classes. Watching the instructors correct them added to the instructional value of the DVD. It is great to see Travis or Chris execute a drill because the viewer gets to see a pro move. When a student does the same drill it allows the viewer too see common errors that need to be corrected and hear Chris and Travis' comments.

Great job on the DVD!

10-22-08, 18:35
Chris/Travis,

Can we get a break down on the gear your using in this video. Travis talks about gear in the Special Features but you get the sense that he's careful about endorsing specific gear. In fact I don't even thinks he mentions the magpul gear on his rifle :)

I'm particularly interested in which M4 mag holsters you guys are using, as I've run a vest but I thought the speed of these holsters was well demonstrated in the video.

Also what compensator is on Travis's weapon?

Also it looks like Travis has an ambi-safety he can manipulate with his trigger finger. The demo's of the BAD on there are compelling too, especially on the malfunction drills.

FromMyColdDeadHand
10-23-08, 00:09
Travis and Chris,

May I suggest a roll over function on the next DVD so that you could roll a mouse over the gear and it would tell what it is? You could pimp the manufacturers for stuff to include them. Plus you'd stop the questions. :)

kevN

I don't care if it's delivered the next day or if it takes 10 days. But paying more than twice as much as the products value on shipping...that's not really economical. ;) Maybe there will be a cheaper alternative...at least I hope so.

USPS would be great, especially out here FedEx and UPS are rediculously expensive.

I ordered on Oct 16th and received mine yesterday -- so you should be getting yours day now. Not sure what you meant by "haven't got any word from Magpul" as I received an automated order confirmation email. One time all the way thru, and I mean all the way, even the cleaning part. I about wore out the drill that Travis and Chris do that was on the web. I watch the second disk more than the first, just more fun drills to watch. I haven't grabbed a rifle and run thru the drills while watching it yet.

Just thinking about what would be cool for the next DVD. Start off the class with the students running a complete drill, and probably really sucking at it, and then show them running the same drill after the class. Kind of a "Private Pyle, you are definitely born again hard" moment.

I just wish someone would yell out "Wolverines!!!" after one of the drills.

Gotta get me one of those ambi bolt releases, and Travis makes that dual magazine set-up seem to be a lot less Mall Ninja.

1. Fundamentals are fundamental

2. Major education gained on proper gear and placement

3. I want an SBR

I believe the sling mounts are a custom creation of Travis's.

Pretty slick little bit of kit. Seeing these guys on video pales in comparison to seeing them in person. Buy the DVD, drool, then spend the dosh and go to one of their classes and shoot with them. Its the icing on the cake.

There's alot to be learned from these two!

As for the gear I will try to hit it all...I apologize if I miss some...

-Attire: Mountain Hard wear shirts most of the time and Arc'Teryx Combat jackets and Oakley boots.

-No the pants are not a Magpul Prototype (but great idea) they are Carhearts and Wrangler carpenter pants.

-Weapons: Travis: Stealth upper with 11.0 LaRue rail and KX3 and the other was a Knights SBR
-Weapons: Chris: KAC SBR with URX rail.

-The sling plate is called (for now) the ASAP plate. Ambi sling attachment point. More info will be out soon;)

-The BAD (battery Assist Lever) is only a Patent pending prototype but unfortunately not in production right now.

-Holsters: Bladetechs and Safariland 6004s

-Mag pouches: Bladetech and BAE systems Eclipse line M4 speed pouches.

-Aimpoint T-1's and ML3's

-Most all LaRue Mounts except for Chris Knights Aimpoint mount... but we are running all T-1s on LaRue high mounts now.

Yeah, that was one of my favorties as well. Too bad they couldn't keep all the "bloopers" that were filmed that weekend.

One thing that the average viewer doesnt know is the round count of that block of instruction. As you can see, most everyone was running suppressed. We were rained out one day, so in a matter of 42 hours I believe I had 1900+rds through my rifle.

Without much cleaning and just some lube here and there, there were alot of abuse being put to our gear, and everything ran pretty well.

EXCEPT, of course, when the damn cameras were there in front of you and they caught EVERYTHING that happened at the ejection port, as you all know from the highlighted drill.

Great time, lots learned..

To your last question, yeah I ran a short dot for some of that class..

Question for Chris or Travis,

What length barrel is Chris running in his Knights Armament SBR on the DVD. It looks like somewhere around 11.5 to 12.5 inches, although it was kind of hard to tell from the DVD. On the second disk, Neil was running a really similar set-up but it looked like his barrel was shorter than Chris's, closer to 10.5 inches.

Also, a big Bravo Zulu on the DVD. Very well done, would love to see any other DVDs Magpul Dynamics produces.:D

Spartan,

Both KAC guns that I ran in the video were 11.5. The one in the gun cleaning section with the SR-15 rail was a 11.5 as well. I think Neil does run a Noveske 10.5.

I only ran that 7.0 rail KAC gun because I wanted to run the same set up that the students ran when I taught DOD classes. However I always preferred more rail, I like the longer rails for better control, which is why I run longer rails now.

NeverForget.... you are correct sir about Travis's nomenclature. I noticed this too. It was no where to be found. I would love to see a 2nd DVD. The first one was great. I have watched it numerous times.

Hmm an investigation there must be...

2nd Magpul Dynamics dvd? 3rd? 4th? 5th? 169th? If it were up to me I would want every class filmed. Poor Mr. Haley and Mr. Costa would be worked like dogs, but I'm sure they're up to it. I know I would be.

Congrats. Hey what better way to bring a child into the world than a tactical pistol training class with Magpul Dynamics!

Chris my Christmas wish is for another Magpul Dynamics dvd. I'm going to bring the dvd for my usual family gathering after-dinner movie. Happy Thanksgiving to you as well.

My copy came in 3 days, normal shipping and Im in Indiana.

Awesome stuff and thanks for the sticker! I need one of those Aimpoint/USMC hats like Travis has.

Im def gonna mirror chris's sling setup on my boomsticks.

And is it just me, or are some of the students on the 1st DVD doing reloads Painfully slo? Right now, my range time is just for fun, and my spare mag comes from the back pants pocket, but some of the students are like BMV employees. wow

Chris,

I brought my copy back to the sandbox and showed it to my team (PSD contractors). It was well received, and motivated more than a few of those who normally are not keen to train on such things. It is a sad fact that many of those who take of the profession of bearing arms, are content with their level of training.

Sorry I missed your Houston seminar, but our leave schedules are fixed. I will be searching you out in the future.

John, Very good point and one we stress consistently in classes... being "content" or "comfortable in ones training" means a the lack of motivation to survive... as you said its unfortunate that most don't take as much pride in our lifestyle as warriors to push failure points... It may be hard to change that... but we can let it be known!

Stay safe and also sorry we missed you in TX... we will work it out in the future just give us a call. I will also be calling Matt when I can come up for air.

Before you criticize the students, film or time yourself doing reload drills. You may find your not as fast as you think you are.

I don't know if that is a criticism of their skill. I thought the same thing, not because they were slow, but in that they didn't seem to try to be fast. I just thought they were running 3/4 speed to work out the kinks.

I just think everything looks slow compared to how fast Costa is talking.

Dammit, know I have to go downstairs and watch it again.

When I take a class I have to bring a dump bag with twinkies in it.

Thats more IT. I know im no speed monster, but they just seemed leisurely. Imma see if i can get my friend to the range to shoot alittle video. see how i stack up.

A person can't move faster than their skill level permits. If someone can't move correctly slow, then there is no way they are going to be able to do it fast.

It has already been said, but advanced shooters like Chris and Travis make the majority of other people look really slow.

I know at times I feel like I am cooking at a range/stage/whatever and then I see it on film (or a timer clues me in) and the footage can be humbling.

Just received mine today. I am thoroughly impressed. The quality is top notch. Travis' and Chris' styles and methods are so different yet they compliment each other well, from an instructional standpoint. I really like how they how their own personal methods and how although different, get the job done effectively. The pace is never boring and the camera angles are interesting to say the least. Definitely the best production I've seen in a dvd set in a very long time. If there were "Oscars" for this things, they'd get my vote!

Again, hats off to the two of you. Brilliant work!

Me too; and all that i can say is "WOW!" What a video! We all know that it can not replace actual training, but it is a wonderful supplement to your training. Like many others here, I am on that quest to improve my craft. My coworkers think that I am really good, but I know that I have a lot of room to improve. I plan to attend a class later if the F.B.O.P. will pay, heck if they just give me the time to attend and I will pay for my own class. The video is a must have in your library. Also, need to get my hands on a few of those bolt devices.

I received my set yesterday, after ordering directly from Magpul. I wanted you guys to get the complete profit margin. ;)

Excellent, excellent DVD. I was really impressed at the broad amount of information Travis and Chris went over. There is a LOT of good info there, and I have only had time to watch the first DVD. I really liked their presentation skills as well.

RichFitz, as soon as I finish watching the entire set this weekend, I will post a "big thumbs up" on Amazon. Thanks for producing such a educational and informative product. Please pass on my thanks to your folks.

I'm ordering two more sets for Christmas gifts. :D

I have a question regarding some of the material in the DVD's.

I noticed in the DVD's there was not any kind of "push/pull" check when mags were inserted. Also, on the malfunction section...a "tap" or slap was advocated rather than a "push/pull" check.

SWAT mag just had an article where some of the problems associated with slapping a magazine with worn feed-lips was discussed. I have also personally "slapped" a magazine, which upon a push/pull check came out. I would think if you had a malfunction in the first place...the integrity of the magazine may be suspect, anyway.

Are there some things I'm missing regarding the benefits of the "slap" over the push/pull....or is it just a speed thing?

Thanks!

sdacbob, you beat me to it. I finished watching the second disc last night and was thinking the same thing. Some lefty-specific stuff -- other than the pealing back drill that was run with the folks using their left-side -- would have been fantastic.

There was some other post that listed the gear Travis and Chris used in the video. While mentioning the holsters it didn't specify what their secondaries were. Was Chris using a G17, G22 or G21? Travis, what 1911 is that? Nice rigs!

FromMyColdDeadHand
12-21-08, 11:18
We need Joan Rivers to do a recap of all the designers that Travis and Chris wore.

What is the vest/chest rig Chris has on in the 2nd class, late in the DVD, shooting around the cars? I think the holster is in it too.
