No need to educate you all on this date. (I hope) I subscribe to the belief that tensions were so high WWI would have ignited anyway, and the poor wrong turn by Ferdinand's driver just moved the beginning of the war up a few months. But nevertheless it led the world down a path it still hasn't recovered from.

If anyone hasn't read it, the Guns of August is probably one of the best non-novel, no-BS "history" books on the beginning of the Great War. If you enjoy novels Under Fire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Under_Fire_%28novel%29) was written during the war by a French soldier and is a great read. I hate novels, but I found Under Fire to be fascinating.

Get out from your WWII pill boxes and study what caused all that drama in the first place! Garands and MG42s are cool, but knowing why Serbians and Bosnians hate each other is cooler and way more practical.

By the way, if I ever form a radical separatist group it will without a doubt be called "The Black Hand".

.....

Because nothing says "we should continue this visit" like having a bomb tossed under your car earlier in the day... ;)
That whole trip was just a bad idea, imho...

Funny how when I studied World War I back in the mid 1970s, as a related interest to my fascination with nearly all things World War II, even then it seemed like 100 year ago to me at that age.
