Sorry, no scantily clad women posing with the VP9 but did manage to get some pics of the slide with the charging inserts removed, as well as the inserts themselves, and with the 10-8 rear sight installed.

First, my apologies for the poorly exposed iphone pics, but wanted to get these pics taken quickly and posted to share.

Here's a photo my Macgyver sight drifting setup. It's basically a Gen1 BJ Tool & Machine Universal Sight Pusher. Works well with slides with parallel sides but the newer generation of slides with complex contours and non-parallel sides complicates matters as difficult to drift sights can cause the slide to cant within the tool when pushing hard. I've been clamping wood blocks to the base of the tool and the top of the slide to minimize this slide twist for many years now but recently discovered they have a Gen2 version that incorporates a clamp that accomplishes this task much better.

The HK factory rear drifted out with ease. The last two guns I worked on were a M&P Shield and a Kahr P380, both had rear sights the appeared to be welded to the slide or milled and formed on the slide itself so I may be biased when I say the HK sights floated out of the dovetail.

Here's a semi-nude pic of the slide with the rear sight removed:

Close up of the charging inserts, removed from slide, as detailed in my other post:

Upon examining the flattened inserts, I would advise against grinding them out of the slide. They are too small and there is no way of holding or securing these things, and even if you found some magical way to work on them, it would be impossible to get the two flats/planes perfect to match the slide contour. If you don't like the bulge, either wait for the factory version or just grind them on the slide directly, as discussed.

Okay, here's the FULL ON NUDE pic of the VP9 slide - no insert and no rear sight:

While it looks okay bare, the undercut nature of the channel leaves a sharp edge when grasping this area. I would recommend against removing the insert completely.

Note, if you look at the inside of the insert, you can see a hollowed out area that I suspected was hiding inside. When looking at the flattened inserts, you can see faint rectangular outlines appear, which correspond to this hollow area. Given this, exercise caution if you choose to flatten your charging inserts and don't get too aggressive when taking it down.

10-8 rear sight, installed on VP9 slide with flattened inserts:

With exception of the 10-8 rear sights for the Shield (how ironic), all my 10-8 rear sights for 1911's, EMP, Glocks, and full size M&P's required some degree of fitting. Like most quality products, some degree of gunsmithing will be required and is well worth the effort to achieve a good fit. Proper tools certainly will help in this endeavor.

....well, almost. Just waiting on some Dawson fiber optic fronts. Due to focal length, subject to lens distance, shaky iphone, etc, this is not the exact sight picture when holding the firearms at arms length. The gap of light around the front sight is in fact less than what is shown in the pic. Nevertheless, a plain rear (10-8 when available) with a high-contrast front has been my defacto setup for a number of years now. Even my wheelguns have an identical setup, using an Apex u-notch rear blade instead. Once the Dawsons arrive, I'll update this thread with a new pic.

These cleaned up VP9's are making me wonder if I made the right call with an HK45c...
Looking good.

Who's front sight is in the slide now??

Can you use the standard Trijicon front sight with the 10-8 rear?

Thanks.

Those are the OEM/factory front sights you see in the pic. I'm still waiting on my custom sized fiber optic front sights from Dawson. Ordered several actually

Here's a blurb from another forum I wrote detailing the front sight choice I made........short answer, as long as your front sight of choice is 0.155" tall, you will be fine:

The front sight width to rear sight notch ratio is mostly personal preference.

The P30, 45C (and probably the 45), and the VP9 OEM rear sight all use a 0.156" wide notch, and are 0.270" tall; the front sight all measure 0.140" wide and are 0.155" tall.

The 10-8 rear sight designed to fit the HK P30, 45, etc.....utilize the same 0.156" wide notch and have the same 0.270" height. If you choose only to replace the HK OEM rear sight with a 10-8 rear sight, there should be no change in POI.

If you want to go with a different front sight while keeping the HK OEM rear, or with a 10-8 rear, you will need a front sight that is 0.155" tall to insure no change in POI.

If you like how the current 0.140" wide front sight sits within the 0.156" rear notch, then you only have to find your preferred front sight of choice in 0.155" tall and 0.140" wide.

All of my Glocks have a 0.140" wide rear notch, paired with either a 0.125" wide or 0.115" wide front. As I my eyes get older, I am finding the 0.115" wide front is faster on target (i.e. my eyes focus better at speed) w/o any compromise in accuracy. Therefore, I have been leaning towards sight combinations that give me a 0.025" differential (0.140 - 0.115 = 0.025) between rear notch and front width. Note, the VP9 has a 0.016" differential out of the box and my soon to be changed 0.140/0.125 glocks and other platforms to have a 0.015" differential.

Fortunately, the Glock 17 has an almost identical sight radius to the VP9. I shoot and prefer the G17's that have the 0.140/0.115 combo over the 0.140/0.125 combo.

To achieve this with the HK OEM or 10-8 rear sight (0.156" wide), I would need a 0.131" wide front sight. 0.156 - 0.025 = 0.131

Dawson, my current front sight of choice only has a 0.155" tall x 0.115" wide fiber optic and a 0.155" tall x 0.125" wide tritium. Both meet the height requirement but not the 0.131" width requirement.

If I wanted tritium, I could likely be happy with the 0.155 x 0.125 wide front, only 0.006 narrower.

The great thing with Dawson is that they can either modify an existing sight in inventory or make you a custom sight for an additional charge of $10. Since modifying the tritium 0.155 x 0.125 for a fiber optic rod would have cost the same $10 as requesting a 0.155 x 0.130 (left out the last 0.001) 'custom' fiber optic, the decision was easy.

Here's the good news. That $10 custom programming charge is a one-time fee and only applied to my first sight. The other extra 0.155 x 0.130 front sights I ordered did not incur the $10 fee. This also means that if anyone else decides to order the 0.155 x 0.130 front fiber optic sight, you will not pay the $10 fee. Only caveat is that you may need to wait until Dawson lists this particular front sight on their website or call them and tell them some sucker already ordered one.

Sorry for the long explanation. My choice of a 0.130 wide front may not be to your liking and I wanted readers to understand the process so they may decide for themselves.

Dawson Precision part no. 050-696
0.155" tall x 0.130" wide ramped fiber optic front sight

So my custom fiber optic front sights arrived from Dawson Precision yesterday in 0.130" wide. As detailed in the above post, I was looking for an identical rear notch/front width differential used in my Glock 34/17/19/26 setups.

Part# 050-696 can be referenced if you want to order these exact sights w/o a $10 custom charge.

Note, these did require considerable fitting, more than usual, to fit the VP9 front sight dovetail. The factory OEM front sight came out quite easily, like the rear sight.

Sight picture is excellent and faster with more light visible around the front sight blade.

Too much coffee at work today and still had energy to burn tonight.....decided to stipple some VP9 grip panels and a backstrap for a friend:

Warning......HK polymer emits a horrible odor when stippled.....more so than Glocks, M&P's, Sigs and I now have a rippin' headache.

How much work did it take you to get the front sight drifted in? Also, nice work on the stippling. I feel the trend is to go a bit too heavy handed with it nowadays

drifting the front sight was really easy................once I got the front sight sanded and filed to fit.

Dawson made me a p30/45/etc series HK sight to my requested specs as the VP9 was dimensioned with dovetails identical to the P30/45 etc.

However, a cursory glance and comparison clearly shows the Dawson front sight with a larger dovetail base:

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3889/14866845673_29b83a5b4e_c.jpg

you can clearly see the height difference in between the DP (left) vs the OEM (right)

I forgot to take an 'after' photo of the fitted front sight but you can figure out based on the photo how much grinding was needed.

Al oxide paper, safe sided mini-bastard file and a triangular dovetail file. Not shown is the bucket of elbow grease required to get the sight to fit.

Once filed down to size, my McGuyver'd BJ500 universal sight pusher had no problems drifting it into position.

Despite the sore fingers and tender nail beds, it was worth the effort as the sight picture is much improved in my opinion.

You need to send that comparison pic to Dawson. That can't be right.

Already sent them an email and photo along with some dimensions. I checked my P30 and 45C, and both appear to have the same dovetail as the VP9.

The VP9 dovetail length measured 0.303" at the 'center' hump, and 0.295" towards the lateral wings. you can see the slight hump on the OEM sight, likely used to retain it in the slide's dovetail.

The Dawson sight measured 0.3175", 0.014" - 0.022" larger than the OEM sight = lots of filing required.

I asked Dawson the check the dovetail size (front to back) on their P30/45 front sight bases. They checked several sights in inventory and they ranged in size from 0.3165" to 0.3185"

Therefore, based on my sample size of one, my VP9 required some fitting of the Dawson fiber optic front sight.

This is not unusual for aftermarket sight and I will emphatically state it was well worth the effort to install them on my VP9. Note, my 10-8 rear also required some considerable work as well.

With the right tools and patience, you too can install your favorite flavor sight.

Man that is quite a difference in size, my Dawson FO front for my HK45 required a fair amount of filing with a triangle needle file and a bastard file, but not nearly that much. My Dawson rear sight also required a fair amount of filing to fit as well.
