View Full Version : Why is this buffer so chewed up?

I am posting this on behalf of my internet retarded friend. He has a great shooting midlength Armalite that we just upgraded with a Troy MRF rail, and gas block and a couple of other things. Today, this chewed up buffer tube was brought to our attention at our favorite gunshop. What would cause this? Is it an inferior quality buffer, or is it possible that the upper receiver was bored incorrectly and the bolt carrier is actually riding at and angle? Any help would be great!

Burr on the back of the carrier. Knock it off with a file. I think it can be seen in the pic...

You have a burr on the ass end of your bolt carrier. Proabally at the corner of the clearance cut for your buffer retainer.

Wow. Nasty bur for sure is making the outer edge cuts, but what is causing the scratches on the center part of the buffer?

Opening and shutting the gun.

The bottom edge of the carrier touches the buffer slightly when doing this.

Doh! You are right. Guess I wasn't thinking. It is the obvious stuff that often eludes me. LOL.

I have had this happen- no big deal. Take some fine grit sand paper or a dremel tool with a buffing/deburring wheel on it and smooth out the "Buffer Retainer Channel) on the lower rear of your Bolt Carrier. Don't worry about buffing your buffer out- the scratches are pretty deep and it wont help/hinder performance.

Dave,

Are you sure? Isn't is possible that the 0.00009 grams of missing material could cause a short stroke? :D

It'll actually cause extraction problems. You can correct this with an H12 buffer and 3 or 4 O rings in the extractor!!
