To the humble flash hider Uncle Sam calls A2,
I have a few words of appreciation for you.
Hiding flash is what you do best,
You do it as well as all of the rest.
But somewhere along the way what I've found,
You fell out of fashion, just tossed to the ground.
Surefire, AAC, Smith, BCM,
Maybe you’re not as trendy as them.
There’s no “Vortex,” “Battle,” or “Black” in your name,
But you expertly handle the flash just the same.
Proven for decades, worn and abused,
In jungles, mountains and deserts used.
Reporting for duty from sunset to sunrise
You kept many a soldier’s position from compromise.
A classic look that’s always a fit,
You even compensate a bit.
A mount for suppressors with no special collars,
And best of all you’re only eight dollars.
Perhaps the reason I love you the most,
Is the way you just work without any boast.
So thank you A2, for all that you do,
As for me, my ARs will be wearing A2s.

As someone with only A2s on my rifles, I concur. The 'only 8 dollars' bit was great rhyme.

The purpose it to protect the firer from flash-blindness at night, not to conceal his position.

Check this out, the A2 does a damn good job concealing a position for $8: http://vuurwapenblog.com/2014/01/12/ar-15-muzzle-device-comparison/.

I hope this shows up as it shows how some very popular MDs did, some of them were quite bad even though they are said to negate flash in some way. It looks as if you can have flash suppression or recoil reduction, when trying to get both it just doesn't seem to work out. I was a little surprised at the compensation the A2 provided?:

I have found no reason to switch after asking many questions, reading info here, and reading everything I could find on the net for pros and cons. I don't shoot that well anyways, mediocrity is the norm for me. I'm just not one of the cool kids that gets in on the newest wiz bang stuff, it's awful hard to be tactical while fixing cars.

Hmmm... You arent my dad, are you?

He fell through a "floor" last month and broke the left leg... 18 screws, I think. I must say, his free time has been less entertaining.

I came to the same conclusion. I think our limited resources are much better spent on triggers, barrels, bolts, optics. . . and TRAINING.

Thanks for the well-wishes, all.

Thanks for bringing a smile to my face. The A2 actually is hard to improve upon when you only criteria is flash suppression.

That was an unexpected poem... very nice, and get well. Being hurt sucks. The meds also make you go a bit loco.

I've he's your injury before. You'll be around on crutches in no time.

I understand, markm. It's SO long and has lots of big words. Let me summarize it for you: A2 = junk

Wait... I thought it was an Ode to the A2. ??

Is it sarcasctic? I do love the good old A2.

Ok... It's Friday and that means it's painfully slow on this site. I read the Ode, and I'm puzzled why you'd describe it as having "lots of big words".

I was expecting something on par with a Santoro diatribe.

Sorry, markm, I'm familiar with your humor from other posts and yes, I was being sarcastic. I'm sorry the humor did not translate.

Excellent (and musical) summary of why we selected it in 1983.
