I decided to try an AGP Arms 10/22 takedown conversion kit (http://www.agparms.com/agp-arms-10-22-takedown-kit-many-options/). This converts your existing standard 10/22 (not the new Ruger takedown 10/22's) to a lightweight takedown rifle that will fit in a small case, such as a padded laptop case that's around 18" wide. The kit adds a side folding stock, a takedown barrel and adapter to fit the barrel to the receiver, plus I added iron sights and a rail. All you need to supply is a 10/22 action. It took about an hour to put the kit together last night, and most of that time was spent trying to level the front sight to eliminate cant.
Had a blast wringing it out at the range today--put 300 rounds through it and I haven't had this much fun shooting .22 in ages. The results were surprisingly good for such a skinny barrel and a takedown configuration. I decided to burn through some bulk ammo and see how it would do: Remington Cyclone, Winchester Wildcat, and Federal 525 bulk. It shot everything well although with the Win Wildcat, I had about 5 FTFs out of 100 rounds. But this is not uncommon with the tighter Bentz chamber that was used in this barrel. I often get FTFs with Wildcat, even in non-Bentz barrels such as my 15-22.
Shooting from a rest at 25 yards, with iron sights, using the Remington Cyclone, here were 3 of the better 5-shot groups:

Here are some shots of the takedown rifle. As you can see in the last image, the longest section of it when taken down is the barrel, which runs to about 17.5" with the flash hider. Since the flash hider is pointless, I may replace it with a thread protector to reduce the length by another inch and fit it in a more compact case.

Cannot say with certainty how well the AGP will hold up since I just got it. But the fit and finish, the quality of the materials, the drop-in fit without any extra fitting required, the accuracy and reliability, and of course the slick takedown system that lets you take down or reassemble the rifle in seconds, were all impressive. My initial take is to give this kit a grade of "promising."
