AK rear sight

I'm curious why the AK was designed with the rear sight so damn far forward. Also wonder why other companys haven't made AK's with rear sights that where better positioned and maybe even with peeps sights instead of the lousy v-notch.

I have been looking at both of these AK peep sights for the past week.

Both look like a serious improvement over stock AK sights.

You have to remember that at the time the AK was designed, there were only 5 service rifles around the world that used apeture sights...

British P13/US M1917 "Enfield"

US M1 Garand

US M1 Carbine

Up until then, all service rifles had rear sights forward of the receiver. It was good enough for what Soviet infantry doctrine called for.

The Finns and the Israelis both used rear apeture sights on their service rifle adaptations of the AK, the Valmet M62 and the Galil.

The updated SAKO M92/95. Production has ceased....too expensive for the Finns to produce, one of the same reasons the Israelis stopped producing the Galil.

I'll also throw this out....I know several guys who come from shooting IPSC and IDPA and who are far more handgun oriented that shoot much, much better with an AK with the standard sight on it than an AR with the rear peep apeture....it's just what you're used to and what you're eye deals with best I guess.

IMO the sights on an AK are about as useless as tits on a boar.

I got the x-47 rail on my Arsenal SAM-7 and put an Eotech 552 on it....couldn't be happier.
