Does anyone know with reasonable certainty what powder was used in the BHA 223 80gr SMK loads that were packaged in their red boxes?
It is a ball powder - not sure of what it is.

Reason I ask is that I have close to 1000rds of it and about 60% is moly'd the other is bare - both have the same powder, bare has 24.5gr & the moly'd has 24.8gr.

I ran some through my son's AR as he is starting to shoot at 600 and it didn't shoot well - I pulled a batch aports, ran a quick ladder test and found a seriously sweet spot at about 24.1.

With other components on the shelf - when he burns through this stuff, I'd prefer to just duplicate the load for him. (It'll keep him away from my stick powder and sorted boollits) :~)

My guess is its something in the Win748 / BLC2 range -

Thanks in advance.

Look at TAC. That used to be the powder for MK262.

This predates Tac - it's probably circa 2000-2001 ish.

Any ideas??

I got my first 8 pounds of TAC at the National Matches in 2000 specifically to duplicate the MK 262 load that I was issued while shooting on the Navy Shooting Team. At the time MK262 was loaded with a canister grade equilvent to TAC. I run 24.0 grains of TAC behind both 77's and 80's. Both are non moly'd.

agr1279,
Good to know. Didn't realize TAC was around then - I had my head buried in Rel15 & N135. We used to wheel & deal with the Navy team back then a lot - great bunch of guys.
The load that shoot well in my sons bbl is 24.1 - actually had the best results at 24.0 and 24.2 with the quick ladder test.
What chamber / throat are you using?

Pulled up some old notes regarding this ammo - I think it was loaded with AA2520. Any confirmation out there?

Those are single feed rounds aren't they? I wonder if they'd have any idea at Black Hills... or if they'd tell you.

Absoloutely single feed - they are 2.520" long.
I have a number of different lots - some bare w/ 24.5 grs and some moly'd w/ 24.7grs.

I would guess that they would tell me to pound sand about which powder they used. :secret:

I'm getting the itch to load up some of those 80s again. It's tough though because the mag length 77s shoot so well that I get too lazy to shoot single feed ammo.

Crank em' out focker....those loads were fantastic. Had a great deal of fun testing those out you sent me. Single feeding deep bombs is for Men!

Nothing funner than long range tannerite!

I should have done some actual development. Next run at those suckers will be better.

I use Douglas stainles 7 twist From Compass Lake with Frank's chamber.
