What is the function of the hole in the plastic spacer?

The following is from Remington:

It allows for the release of the wad as the slug exits the barrel. As the heat and gases build behind the wad, it would get sealed to the base of the slug if the hole was not present. In some cases, it could even get jammed into the base of the slug. The hole allows for air pressure to separate the wad from the base of the slug.

Thank you and best regards,

Slugs: When you are within thirty yards and care enough to send the very best.
