Thanks. Not looking too promising compared to Speer.

If it chronos at 223 speeds thats a good thing with this bullet. Accuracy goes to shit over 3000fps, 2850-2950 is about perfect. Now that nosler owns ssa they know there is no need for a 556 load that is not accurate. The 64 bsb expands down to 1600fps. Depending on your location you should get full expansion to 300 yards easy.

The 64 bsb is far tougher than the speer loads, and they do not even offer 556 loads either. The 64bsb, 62tbbc, and 50 tsx are the top 3 bullets on the docs list (new one may have been added like gmx I have not checked) so as long as they are accurate if you ever need to use this load it should work great.

here is the thread

SSA ammo is marked 5.56 on the box,and that sometimes factors in my choice when buying ammuntion.
i have speer 64gdsp in 223 and it out performed the SSA 5.56

In what way did the speer outperform the ssa offering?

I purchased 500 rounds about 2 years ago when the round first showed up on SSA's site. If I remember correctly they crono'd in the very high 2700's and several just barley crossed 2800fps in my bcm 14.5" middys. When was this low pressure ammo pirchased that everyone has? Did this start happening around the Nosler purchase of SSA? It would make sense that nosler would put thier own personal spin on products bearing thier projectiles.

after the transition.
the speer i chronographed was several years ago and that lot of ammo was going about 75-100 fps faster than the current lot of SSA i have.
i have not taken this newer stuff to the range.
jdubya and i bought some from ssa at the same time.
jdubya was able to chronograph the newer ssa ammo i have not.
i dont know what powder they(SSA) used but it was a spherical ball powder with a charge weight of 21 grains the speer 64 grain gdsp 223 has a charge weight of 24.3 grains.
i only pulled down one round

Dont get wrapped up in how fast either of these loads are. They have a very low threshold for expansion. The construction of the 64 nosler is also different from the gold dot. The nosler 64 is almost identical to the 62 trophy bonded bear claw. The only real difference is the nosler has a wider meplat.

The velocity kenndapp is getting from the 14.5 falls right inline with the 2850 speed I get from a 16. From my noveske 18" spr I get 29 something. With these speed and my location I get full expansion just shy of 300 yards, possibly a little more.

The gold dot have been known to show good accuracy while the nosler is known to be a tougher bullet. Factory loadings have shown to not have the greatest acuracy with the nosler. Hondloaded the accuracy reports all seem very good, with most people claiming the best accuracy in the 2800-2980fps range.

Now that nosler lists there accuracy load uses cfe223. It is also the fastest load listed. Now that nosler bought out ssa I bet they just load there accuracy load from the manual with a non canister grade cfe223. As long as your getting acceptable accuracy I would not be worried about the bullet not doing its job.

Thanks for the responses. I grabbed 3 boxes to try out first hand.

Chonoed some yesterday. Both old stock (2 years old) and new stock (around 6-8months old) out of a BCM 14.5" barrel. I didn't record any dat cause I was just making sure this stuff close to where it should be after reading this thread. It averaged mid 2800's. most close to 2900.

I just went through 60 rounds of the SSA to test for accuracy and function (limited I know but at my expense) with the SSA 64 PPT ammo compared to Speer 55 GDHP .223 in my rifles. Issued duty ammo is Fed XM-193, but I wanted a better performing round in my personal rifles that would allow me to use the free stuff for training without having to adjust anything.

The SSA fired to the same poa/poi as the XM-193 both suppressed and unsuppressed out of a 10.3 SBR. The SSA shot a much tighter group (50 yard prone on NRA 50yard zero target) with the XM-193 grouping around it. Any deviation in accuracy is smaller than what I bring to the table and not caused by the ammunition. The SSA was able to lock the bolt to the rear suppressed on an empty magazine.

The Speer GD did not shoot to the same poa/poi as the cheaper XM-193 and was far enough off to require different hold overs during training to get hits. The .223 Speer would not lock the bolt to the rear on an empty mag while shooting suppressed. Still more accurate than the XM-193 (what isn't?) and was noticeably "softer" than the other 2 rounds.

No chrono data, just the over/under gas check of the bolt locking back on the last round or not. The .223 Speer did not.

Just ordered another 6 boxes, and will slowly build up a small stockpile. Really no need for more than a couple of mags to be loaded at a time. Of course your barrel and results might be completely different from mine.

was the SSA 64 grain a recent purchase?

Any body run any more ssa 64gr over a chrono? After reading anoutber low velocity report on TOS concerning this round I'm wondering if this particular round is now regularly down loaded from the original ssa specs.

i have a feeling that the SSA is loaded to these specs https://www.google.com/fusiontables/embedviz?viz=CARD&q=select+*+from+1C5o2xk_hWmBsTsTUWwoZ262XZOtOsNloF2QDW28+where+col4+%3D+39674+order+by+col0+asc&tmplt=1&cpr=1

which is the nosler 223 defense 64 grain ammo

Just a FYI shooters pro shop is the SSA factory outlet and the have a decent mil/Leo discount. Especially if you wait for one of their sales. I got about 1000 rounds if it a few years back at a killer price.

This is true to what I have experienced aswell. I opted for the beck ammo a ways back. I think I payed a whopping $11 a box on sale too. Easy to purchase an entire case. Disappointed in ssa/nosler. Not bad ammo.... But certain ammo is just not marked correctly.

Brand and headstamp on brass..................................16 " Velocities ( FPS ).................20" Velocities ( FPS )

SSA 64gr BSB 5.56........SSA 5.56.............................Av.2572, ES 109..........................Av. 2570, ES 68.............

Is there a typo in those listed velocities? (i.e. the 16" barrel had a higher velocity than the 20" barrel?)
