I am visiting a friend in Selma, TX area. He is new to area and has not been out shooting yet. Any ideas for rifle range in the north SA to south Austin area? We prefer one that is informal and we could pay one time visitor range fee or get membership and shoot same day. Planning to go out Saturday morning, 8/30.

Check out the below range. Josh is a stand up dude(former Ranger) and has a good facility. Great range and offers classes and host competitions.

Thanks, that looks good! I would not gave looked at it closer being called a Handgun range. But looks good for rifle as well.

Yep, think it goes out to 300 yards. The name is from before he had a store or range and only taught CHL classes.

Nice place. That would have been my recommendation as well if you want to shoot rifle.

We made it to Lonestar Handguns this morning. Thanks for the recommendations! Not a place to shoot precision targets or sight in loads, but lots of steel plates for plunking fun. Nice to be able to just drop in, pay $17 for two and have hours of fun.

Plenty of lanes that even though it was busy there were still half the lanes empty around Noon. Even though some places say it opens at 10am on Saturday it really is 8:30am.

One down side is you can never get in front of the shooting line to retrieve brass. After seeing a clip of HXP .39-06 bounce forward past the line we used a cloth to cover the ejection port on the Garand to retain those precious babies. Most AR brass bounces onto your arm (HOT!) or behind the line.

The lane barriers do echo the muzzle blast so I wore both foam plugs and over ear muffs.

Overall, a friendly easy place to shoot steel for a few hours.

Josh is a Ranger School grad.

He's a nice guy (other then misleading people regarding his Ranger Quals)

Bracken is by the mall on the NE side.

Bexar County Range (takes a little longer to get there)

Man they have done a TON of work since the last time I was there(2009 time frame). Looks like its gotten more expensive(I think I paid 75 bucks for a whole years membership). Its also gotten a lot nicer(just had 2 pistol bays and a 100 yard rifle range). It also used to basically be a free for all with very little rules, if nobody else was on the range you were using you could set targets anyway you want, holster draw, move and shoot, etc...

Dont forget to get BBQ in Lockhart if you drive up that far. Lunch and dinner can be accomplished at any one of a number of places(I think Black's was my favorite).

I didn't realize he was a grad and never a ranger. Thanks for the heads up.

Not exactly North San Antonio but when I lived there I went to this place a couple times. I never had any complaints.

Range Rule #14: Do not shoot anyone or yourself.

Got to love the plain spoken rules there!

Nice range, was there last week
Only drawback is you may have to wait to get on the range.
