First thing that sprang to mind when I read the story was Bio Meat:Nectar.
But it's essentially large Escargot. Strange food? Try Haggis, Cow Brain, or Rocky Mountain Oysters.
Nothing good comes from Africa.

Not sure if I would ever want to try to eat something that can break down exterior paint or stucco as a food source. When you add the fact that they can carry meningitis...Ugh, maybe they were trying to create their own horror movie.

I would be far more leery of the Brazilian Wandering Spider. They can hide in Banana Crates and have been discovered over seas after being transported.
