After hyping up a new release for the past week Ruger annouced today that they have released thier new scout rifle chambered in 5.56 nato, with a 16 inch 1 and 8 twist barrel. Of course they aren't using readily available mags, and are pricing it high compared to the mossberg mvp. Gunblast.com has a review posted already. Jeff Quin has never met a gun he didn't love.
I'm not rushing out to buy this one.

So its not compatible with the AR15/M4 mags?

Nope. They chose to release it with accuracy international mags. The mags are huge for a 10 rounder, looks like the floorplate is almost 5 to 6 inches from the magwell.

Conflicted.

I still like the Mossberg MVP Patrol better.

I have the patrol in 7.62 and am very pleased with it.

The .308 was sorta Niche to me... the .223 makes no sense.. At least off the top of my head... What's it going to do that a gun I already don't own won't?

Should make 6.8 and .300BLK

At least it'd have use as a hog hunting gun I suppose.

I have two of the GSR's now, I have to see about this 5.56. Agreed, 6.8 and I'm in! I just got done re-checking the GSR's for deer season. We need some pics of this puppy. I did have some of the AI .223 mags, they are good to go, my guess is they wanted to stay with the lever type mag catch/release. Pretty simple and reliable. It would be neat if they did use AR mags, maybe contract Magpul to mold a lever indent into the rear of an AR mag.

EDIT-See they are using Accurate Mags on these, no biggie, if these work with the AI chassis or DBM's, those guys will be happy as they will be available more so to them. I would prefer the polymers though.

AND after further review it appears they have maintained the .308 dimensions on the "bottom metal" used a .308 steel body with a polymer insert for .223.

And a freaking claw extractor on a .223!!

A GSR in 5.56 seems kind of limited. There are lots of lightweight bolt actions in .223 for much less than $1,000.

It would make more sense to add .243 and .260 to the GSR lineup.

I kind of got to agree with this. For the money, the weight, and capacity, I don't see what you can really do with this that an AR won't do better. The only two reasons I can come up with is if you want to use 5.56 here in PA to hunt since the retards won't let you use a semi auto, or if you are trying to be low key or some shit. Other than that I'm lost.

I actually was hoping for the .243 for my daughter. I think they will add it to the line later on.

.223 wouldn't be what I would release the second GSR in. I agree a .243 would have been more popular, I think. I have a .308 GSR and really like it, but I have no desire to get one in .223.

I have the .308 GSR and was hoping for a lgt wgt GSR in 5.56mm. However, it is actually slightly heavier than .308. I'll pass on this one.

A shame it doesn't take AR mags. I have the .308 version and am very happy with it, but I don't feel like investing in another platform that uses mags that I don't currently have, all to shoot .223. Oh well, better luck next time.

The Mossberg MVP Patrol does take AR mags.

If this were cheaper and took AR15 mags then it would be way more appealing to me

I think they should do the GSR in 243 or 260 Rem or 6.5mm Creedmore and 338 Federal. In addition to the 308, of course.

I just don't see a reason to buy a bolt action rifle in 5.56mm unless it has a heavy barrel. Or is built on a CZ micro-Mauser action.

6.5 creedmore would be awesome!

Ruger choosing to release this wasn't surprising in the least. It seems to fit with their corporate culture. They have released their "american" series with a new ranch model chambered in both 5.56 and 300blkout. The 300blk model is tempting, but doesn't fit with my iron sights requirement.

Are the 5.56 Accurate Pattern magazines (that come with the 5.56 GSR) compatible with the polymer AICS 5.56 magazines? I can't seem to find that information.
