Just wondering if anybody us using their M4's for hunting? I know there has to be someone using it for hunting besides me. i live in the Black hills of South Dakota and hunting in the thick forest i use my M4 with an Aimpoint ML3 for super fast shots. Just curious if anybody else was doing it...

this may sound rediculous but i would consider hunting boar with it if i had the chance.

I'm definately part of the minority here but that's what I do with my AR's. I don't have an M4 but all of mine are carbines and I do find what works for the HSLD guys works just as well in the field.

They haven't kicked me out of here yet.

unless it was big game, I wouldn't use an M4 past 150yds or so...just not enough
accuracy there. I'd use a 20 or 24" varminter, myself.

Again...GREATLY depends on exactly what you're hunting.

I haven't bought mine yet (hopefully soon), but that's one of the things I plan on using it for. Hunting everything up to and including deer.

I would if it were legal in PA.

I plan on using mine for hunting, as I consider the AR platform a sport utility gun. Many a deer have been killed with .22LR. I have confidence .223 will do just fine. (With proper Shot placement):D

Depends on your definition of the term "hunting"

4yrs ago I took a 200lb 8pt buck (Whitetail) with a .50 Beowulf that I owned at the time.

I have RRA NM that I have used for coyote hunting. It has a 6x20 simmons sitting on top shoots really good out to 350-400 yards with 75 gr blackhills.

I've smoked a few Jack Rabbits with an M4, but I must say that they were coming right at me.....It was me or the rabbit.:D

That's what I need a 6.8 barrel for (5.56 is apparently NOT illegal in MI, but I still say it's too small).
Nice buck GotM4!!

I'm looking at a 10.5" suppressed 6.8 upper for that. AFAIK I can use an SBR for deer in Florida, with the 5 round mag, but not the can. The can, of course, will be reserved for the piggies!

We can't hunt with NFA weapons in AZ to my knowledge. If I were to get the fudd itch, I'd hunt with a HUNTING RIFLE!

i have killed many of prairie dogs with my M4. I also have killed many deer with a .223 up to about 250 yards. i also have a .223 WSSM that i use, it is very fast and accurate out to about 450 yards with factory ammo.

According to Regulation R12-4-303, you are only banned from hunting with a F/A rifle and/or a Supressor, it says nothing about an SBR. As long as you have a 5-rnd (or less) mag you're fine.

I believe if a modification is made to the mag(to hold 4 or 5 rounds), it must be permanent...but I've been wrong before

I didn't get my AR in time to deer hunt with it last year....but I'm going to use it this season. I have worked up some really good loads using Barnes 62 grain TSX bullets.

Last year I killed 3 deer with my Baer 1911...its the 4.25 inch barrel, officers frame model (stainless Stinger)...it worked like a charm.

I have carried my Bushmaster 14.5" M4 in 5.56mm on quite a few hunting trips. Twist rate is 1:9. I finally nailed a 70lb wild hog with it a few weeks ago. 64grain Winchester power points. I just ordered some of the new cheap steel cased Wolf 75 grain hollow points. Those are going to replace the brass cased soft points for hunting from now on. Assuming the accuracy is decent.

FYI, my Bushmaster shoots 1.5 moa off the bench with the Winchester power points and Q3131, and Privi Partisan 75gr OTM. I thought it was strange that it would maintain that accuracy over such a broad range, 55gr, through 75gr. Although I have shot some other 55gr and 62 grain loads through it that were less accurate ~ 3-4moa.

I have killed about 15 pigs with an AR-15. Some advice:
Limit shots to about 100 yards.
Shoot 200 lb. + pigs through the neck.
Shoot pigs less than 200 lbs. square through the center of the shoulder.
Raking shots on any kind should be discouraged.
Use the following ammo:
Cor-Bon DPX 53 grain
Black Hills 68-grain match
Black Hills 75-grain match
Black Hills 77-grain match
W-W 64 grain PP
Same is true for deer, except shoot deer through the shoulder or immediately right behind the shoulder.
Shot placement is a major concern. Gut shot animals can run a long ways, are hard to recover, and suffer.

Forgive my ignorance. I currently hunt with a bolt action but recently purchaced my first M4. Where do you find 5 round mags?

Last year i killed a large doe with my M4 with 75 grain TAP....she got about 7 yards and dropped.

SPADE - I purchased some 5 rounders direct from Bushmaster.
