Why is it that .45, and especially .40s&w are still at their high price points (I.E., 18.99-20.99 for a box of WWB for .40)? .45 ACP is still about $47 a box, and someplaces I am starting to see an increase at the price.

It still boggles my mind .40 is still high considering it is dropping out of favor recently. But prices of 9mm are dropping, but I still see a lot of people shooting it.

I shoot 45 almost exclusively and in my experience 45 was never too hard to find even during the whole crazy jump in prices.

I think the more radical change in 9 was due to the fact that during that time many people who previously didnt buy a gun went out and bought one and 9mm is very frequently recommended as a good choice for a first time pistol owner.

Prior to the scare I was able to get a box of 45 (50 rounds) for about 15-16 dollars online. Now the cheapest I have paid is roughly 19. So it definitely sucks but it could be much worse as during the scare it was easily 30 a box in store (online was cheaper).

I think the reason for the difference in price change between 9mm vs 40 and 45 is the shift of supply and demand was less dramatic for 40 and 45 than it was for 9mm. Demand for 9mm has been tapering down and 40 and 45 has been about the same. But I too still see a ton of people shooting it. There was an avalanche of new shooters, at least from my own observations at local ranges and LGSs, but think its good that more people in the country enjoy what is our most important freedom.

22LR still remains the Houdini of the bunch.

Not sure where you are buying ammo, but .45 is well below .47 cents per round. Since you didn't specify, I'll assume that you were speaking about .45 FMJ. SGammo.com has self defense loads for the .45 for good prices as well. I suppose if you are sticking to local though you are at their whim.

More people buy 9mm than anything else, I assume.

Locally when my shop gets 9mm 1000rnd boxes I buy them up, not so much for 40 or 45....most people have gone over to 9mm due to the whole price thing.

To our knowledge, the manufacturers have NOT lowered distributors prices on handgun ammo. So what you are seeing is distributors lowering their price to dealers and so fourth.

Agree. We sell 230gr 45 for $375 per 1K. This is hands down some of the best bulk ammo made at .37 cents per round.

Commercially new, not reloads, for well under .40 cents a round:

Look here:
http://gunbot.net/ammo/pistol/45acp/

For that matter, I've never had problems with Freedom Munition reloads, which gets you down to around 31 cents a round.

Pretty good pricing from what I have seen as well.

Maybe the draw down is finally taking effect on the market...

I have noticed that .40 prices have been as good, if not better than 9mm recently. As was mentioned, probably due to amount of firearms available. During the shortage, it seemed the opposite. That is my observation.

9 mm will always be more available and less expensive than 40 and 45. Besides the fact that almost every part of the world is using 9mm and due to that there is always a surplus available, unlike 45 and 40. It also has less materials in it. Coper brass powder exc.

Compared to where 9mm was last year around here it is at about 50% of the price, running in the $200 range, plus or minus about ~$30 depend on what you want. Hell, the Cabela's up here was advertising a case of 9mm for $180, granted it was 115gr Remington loose packed UMC, but still not bad. Personally am thinking I'll pay a little more and pick up another case of S&B and shoot through my old stock which is a rather mixed lot of several brands.

As far as .45ACP goes last time I bought any I paid $15.99 a box for PPU 230gr ball at my local gun store. The store was running a pretty good sale a few months back and I couldn't help myself since steel cased was more than that so I picked up a few hundred rounds.

As far as .40 I couldn't tell you what it is running since I haven't bought any in a couple years.
