It would have been better if he didn't salute. If you're going to do it, do it right or don't do it at all.
The gross irreverence of his gesture is disturbing. Chesty would be heated.

Article says that Raygun started the salute ? would have figured it was wayyyyyy before that, especially consodering the number of former military men who were president.
I would be the first one to criticize this guy, but this really is a tempest in a teacup. In my view folks lose credibility by making an issue out of this stuff. (Not meaning to offend the OP)
There are far more egregious failings to ponder with this one.
Probably won't be a popular sentiment, but being a Vet it doesn't really bother me much.
Plus his WH staff is also so clueless they posted His Idiocy on parade. What a tool and a dull one at that.
It may be a minor thing but it is the shear simplicity of it that makes it so outrageous. It is like he goes out of his way to offend the military, to mock them. And he has no one on his staff able or willing to correct him. He has been CiC how long?

I would be the first one to criticize this guy, but this really is a tempest in a teacup. In my view folks lose credibility by making an issue out of this stuff. (Not meaning to offend the OP)

Comparatively it's not as big an issue as his other travesties. But it's an "obvious indicator" of his gross incompetence to do anything properly. It's kinda of like a minimum wage employee at work with his pants low riding off his ass. It's not the worst thing he will do all day, but it's a clear warning sign of incompetence to come.
When Marines take the time to show a President the proper respect, if you can't or won't take the time to reciprocate correctly, then you really shouldn't be President. It's just one more thing of a list of thousands of things that make this individual unfit for office.

Speaking of proper salutes... The marine nearest the camera seems to have an improper salute, his upper arm is not parallel with the deck.
Sadly the OP has also strayed from protocol. I count 21 exclamation marks in his title but everyone knows there should be 22 in a circumstance as egregious as this.

Regs clearly state if you're holding something in two hands, you don't salute. Alternatively. he could have put the dog down since it looks like it has a leash. Like Obama could have switched drink hands.
This really is just creating controversy. It's stupid as hell and potus should have known better, but it doesn't matter. I'm more interested in how the F22 was FINALLY used in combat.

I think that the skeetshooter has earned himself the right to be in a class of one where the discussion turns to presidents who have had negative effects on the country as a whole. Whoever is second isn't a very close second.
