Over the next couple of weeks im looking to build an ar15. Im new to all of this but fell in love while shooting my buddies Colt le6920 moe edition AR. Ive been doing a bit of reading on here before i made a account and decided it was time to post as i have lots of questions. Im looking at buying a complete upper and complete lower as i have never built an ar15 before. Im looking at the BCM Lower w/fde gunfighter grip and Magpul moe fde stock and pairing it with the BCM Upper Receiver Group, Standard, 16" MID w/ BCM KMR13" Handguard. Will i be able to put these two together and shoot or are other parts needed? Yes im a noob as i have never built an ar before but you have to start somewhere right. Looking to order from G&R tactical.

Thanks for all of the help!

Post the links to what you want to buy from Grant. Not sure if he passes along the free BCG that BCM is offering direct from them. If not you will need a BCG, charging handle and some sights. I am sure Grant will be happy to answer your questions.

What sites would you recommend? Not looking to spend too much on them.

You definitely will not go wrong with BCM.

Enjoy and when you are finished post some pics.

We love us some pics.

DD fixed sights, best bang for the buck and simple.

Checkout Bravo Company's (BCM) web site for the upper. They are currently on sale and include a free bolt carrier group (BCG). A $170 savings.

This! BCM is good stuff but there are plenty of good vendors out there as well.

Thanks for the advice guys! Another question. Whats the difference between fluted and non fluted?

Barrel weight and appearance.

I bought a 16" BCM and put the DD rear sight on. I love it and haven't looked back. I still don't have a red dot, I guess I keep buying ammo instead of a dot. I have been looking at the ELM fluted upper pretty hard recently. I think you will be really happy with the KMR as well. It's really uncanny how light it feels, almost like it's a toy, but it's tough! Good luck on your purchase, and like others have said, throw some pics up when it arrives (and if you order from BCM, it'll be there FAST!).

If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach him how to be a fisherman and he'll always be late for supper

Whats the difference between fluted and non fluted?

There are two levels at which this question can be answered- With a fish and teaching you to be a fisherman. We'll start by giving you a fish.

FISH- For a self defense carbine, there is little to no practical difference. Buy whichever of the two barrels is the better value for the money and you'll make the right choice

LATE FOR SUPPER- For a more in depth answer, you'll need to go fishing for the facts. The above answer will serve you well and you won't be wrong if it satisfies you. But, if you want to know the facts, you'll need to do a search and winnow them out for yourself. Varmint Al's Webpage is a good place to start because he's an engineer and actually modeled what happens when a bullet is shoved at supersonic speeds down various barrel profiles. Be warned, the article goes into some technical details, but will give you a good understanding as to how fluting affects weight, stiffness and accuracy. If you don't have the patience to read the whole thing, here's a good summation-

CONCLUSION ON BARREL FLUTING....

When comparing two barrels of equal weight, length, and material but one is solid and other is fluted, the fluted barrel will have:

-A larger diameter

-Greater stiffness (depending on how the extra diameter/weight is distributed)

-Vibrate at a higher frequency (depending on how the extra diameter/ weight is distributed)

-Less muzzle sag (depending on how the extra diameter/ weight is distributed)

Fluting a solid barrel will:

-Reduce its weight

-Reduce its stiffness

-Increase its natural frequency of vibration

-Decrease its muzzle sag.

-Reducing the weight of a barrel by fluting makes a stiffer barrel than reducing the weight by decreasing its diameter.

-A shorter barrel of the same section, solid or fluted, will sag less and vibrate at a higher frequency.

Once again thanks for all of the info! What all does it take to put the lower and upper together so its 100% ready to shoot?

Mist wolf you are always giving fishing lessons and using that same setup. Can't teach a old dog new tricks huh? Totally playing and your methods are effective.

Answer: 2 pins, ammo, a mag and a target.

Looks like you will need a stock. Get the upper, CH, BCG and sights from BCM.

Great first build. You can't go wrong with that as your first AR. My first AR was based around a BCM upper and I don't regret it for a minute.

In my experience?? All you need to learn is a bit of reading and acouple good youtube videos.
I know you're only mating an upper and a lower, but for you're next build (there's ALWAYS another build) you could try out a full assembly.
It's really not hard and the experience is great
I wish you luck in your AR career!!

I hope you have a large banking account cause it is going to get ugly:cool: Silvercat speaks the truth. I bought a complete for my first and the next was a build. I do not have the AR you speak of but here is my first AR it is a Daniel Defense M4V1 and it is an amazing AR. I would not count them out if your looking to buy a complete.
