Does anyone know of a modular panel insert that one could use to carry mags, a pistol, etc., in a backpack or a laptop case? Basically something that you could grab and just throw in a discreet bag but keeps all your stuff organized. Might also be useful to hang by your mattress to keep extra mags and your handgun at the ready.

Ideas?

Yeah, sort of like that. But maybe something with more options, like velcro.

I like BFG's Dapper series but they discontinued the pouches:

It looks like they are redesigning them and will have some in stock in the next couple months.

In the meantime, any other ideas?

I'd like to install a panel on my bedside too, so I can quickly access my handgun and spare mags.

I've got one of their EDC courier bags and have this for my G19, spare mag, and light. They work great and are easy to assemble. The molle panels and rifle mag sound like what you want. You could also look at Maxpeditions accessories for similar ideas.

Why not get a kangaroo insert with Velcro backings and use that? I've used my Mayflower kangaroo a few dozen times to line a small bag for mags.

If you're looking for more organization, I've also had good luck using the VelSyst fast clip rig, as it has some pretty strong Velcro attachment points and doesn't shift if you packed light. You could do the same with the Haley D3 rig or the various other offerings. Even if your discreet bag is really discreet and not just marketed as such (I've been using a gym bag and plumbers tool carrier for a hand carried bag) you can add the Velcro on your own for pretty cheap even if it's sewn in.
