Excerpts from the article:

On Wednesday, Cody Wilson’s libertarian non-profit Defense Distributed revealed the Ghost Gunner, a $1,200 computer-controlled (CNC) milling machine designed to let anyone make the aluminum body of an AR-15 rifle at home, with no expertise, no regulation, and no serial numbers. Since then, he’s sold more than 200 of the foot-cubed CNC mills—175 in the first 24 hours. That’s well beyond his expectations; Wilson had planned to sell only 110 of the machines total before cutting off orders.

To keep up, Wilson says he’s now raising the price for the next round of Ghost Gunners by $100. He has even hired another employee to add to Defense Distributed’s tiny operation. That makes four staffers on the group’s CNC milling project, an offshoot of its larger mission to foil gun control with digital DIY tools.

“People want this machine,” Wilson tells WIRED. “People want the battle rifle and the comfort of replicability, and the privacy component. They want it, and they’re buying it.”

The last time one of Defense Distributed’s inventions led to such a popular frenzy was the release of blueprints for its “Liberator” 3-D printed pistol, the world’s first fully 3-D printable gun. That free file was downloaded 100,000 times in two days.

The sales numbers for the Ghost Gunner may be far smaller. But at $1,200, every sale helps fund the activities of Defense Distributed. “I’ve never felt more optimistic about the ability of Defense Distributed to become an installed part of the future, and to help create an expansion of the second amendment,” he says. “There’s hope that Defense Distributed can become a significant civil liberties organization…That’s the ambition, the wildest dream of this entity, to have a marked material effect like that.”

BATFE raid to follow . . .

Interesting, I love how small CNC machines are getting. I could care less about making a lower, but I really want a 1ft cube CNC machine. I am kinda curious what it does for coolant and where the chip goes, AL chip can clog up a tool real quick if not flushed away. Cool none the less.

The BATFE has no standing to regulate firearms. All gun control laws/regs. are unnatural, and unconstitutional.

Tell that to Randy Weaver . . .

Tell that to Randy Weaver . . .

IIRC, RW was convinced by a BATF informant to chop a shotgun down below the minimal legal length. It was done for the proposed entrapment to get him into an Aryan Organization that RW had some sort of tie to. Doesn't quite meet the same standards of the legal manufacture of aluminum lowers for your own personal firearms. Now if it was an auto-sear manufacturing mill...

Sure, and then they can raid every last maker, seller or importer of CNC machine tools. Maybe send all skilled machinists to Gitmo too.

I remember two of the three you list. ATF can theoretically raid anyone they want, including a bauxite mine, Home Depot for selling drill presses, etc. It wouldn't make any sense, and no charges will stick. A raid on someone selling CNC milling equipment is far into 42 USC section 1983 liability. I believe there's another thread running regarding lack of immunity for egregiously illegal actions by law enforcement.

But, to be careful, I wouldn't go buying any of those 0% lowers that Ares is selling.

Yep, I'd love to start knocking out some stuff. Given what AR lowers cost, probably the last thing I'd actually make.

200 mills at $1200 = not enough money for the lawyer

It's a machine. What is done with it is a different story. Not the same as with ARES Armor etc... But, we are talking about the BATF.

Anyone with common since and access to a hardware store can produce some effective zips. How the Brits mass produced the Sten on the cheap during World War 2.0 bears to mind.

Point is with the technology of 3D printers and now CNC machines combined with an attractive price point its only a matter of time before someone gets pinched.

Exactly... The shop that built my race car has a full size HASS CNC machine. They can mill engine blocks in it. I am sure a lower would be a piece of cake for it. I would imagine it could cut 6 lowers at once based on then table size. What's the BAFTE gonna do, confiscate every CNC and End Mill machine in the US... Oh shit... I just gave them an idea didn't I?

One of my clients makes metal medical devices and instruments, I just designed the, a facility with 24 HASS CNC's. think of the number of lowers they can make there lol

At that price I would really seriously consider buying one. I dont care to start making lowers, but that would seriously be a cool thing to have.
