Deer season is coming up and the wife wants to use my C15A1 (M16A1) clone with Nikon p223 3x32 scope mounted on carrying handle.
We live in Louisiana so 223 and fmjs are legal to hunt with.
That being said what is the best ammo money can buy for this purpose?
Barrel is old, worn non chrome lined 20" 1/9 twist so I need to sick to lighter bullets.
I have plenty of m193.

Any suggestions?

Winchester's 64-grain Powerpoint will take most southern whitetail deer.

60gr partition, 62gr fusion, 64gr gold dot, 62gr trophy bonded bear claw, 64gr bonded solid base, 65gr game king, 62gr and under tsx/ttsx, 64gr power point, or any other soft point in that weight range bonded or not should work.

I really wish I could use .223 on deer here in VA.

You don't know that til you try. We shoot 77 and 80 grain bullets out of a nominal 1/9 twist 20 inch barrel.

Any suggestions?

Buy a deer rifle.

My vote would be for 70 gr Barnes TSX unless your rifle will not stabilize it in which case 62 gr TSX.

Skypup has a thread about the 70gr TSX for hog hunting and it has performed fantastically. I will be using it this deer season in MO. Barnes specifies that projectile needs a 1/8 twist or faster. Remember, it's not the weight but rather the length. The TSX is longer because it's all copper, no lead core. Skypup's seen near perfect expansion and retention.

You can use the 62 or 55 gr TSX with 1/9 twist. Hornady has a similar bullet line, GMX. As others mentioned, there's a host of soft points you could use. The bonded Federal Fusion would be my choice in that arena.

I second the motion. Commonly available, and reasonably priced (by 2014 standards).

I wouldn't discount the 70gr TSX since it's close to the same length as a 77gr SMK. My 16" 1/9 CL barrel shoots these wonderfully (.75moa). The 62gr TSX would be next choice.

Typically, IMO, a longer barrel doesn't require as fast of a twist as a shorter barrel for the longer bullets (77gr SMK, 70gr TSX, etc.). YMMV of course.

I've only seen one deer taken with a .223. That was a 64 gr Win Power Point. It was a small buck and it ran about 10 yards, stood still, then fell over dead. Range was about 50-60 yards.

115 lb Alabama white tail, shot at 40 yds with 5.56 mm Winchester 64 gr solid base bonded JSP (Q3313) out of an 18" barrel. She ran about 30' and went down hard. The exit wound was quarter sized and the heart and lungs were pretty well blended. I will probably do more hunting with this combo this upcoming season.

I've had very good luck with the Winchester 64 gr power points.

The bullets fragged in the two deer I shot with them. It was lights out in no time.

Taking five deer with the 223/556 and never had a problem. One of them was 180 pounds.

Any bonded 55 or 64 grain bullet will work fine with proper placement. I get it done with hyper velocity 22lr 40 grain solids on 250 lb live weight Whitetails.

I really like the DRT .223 ammo for hunting, I've shot several 250 pounds hogs and they drop on the spot.

I've killed several deer with the Federal Fusion load with no issues.
