View Full Version : Marlin rifling question...

Every Marlin lever action I have ever seen says "micro groove barrel" on it.

Until the other day, I saw one that does not have that on it.

My question is, does that mean it has a different type of rifling or are they just not marking them that way anymore?

Thanks.

Not all Marlins have micro groove barrels. I owned a Marlin 1894CB in .357 magnum for a few years and it had Ballard style rifling.

The Ballard rifling Marlins were an answer by the Cowboy Action Shooter crowd that wanted this rifling because it spun the lead bullets much better.

With jacketed bullets...the Micro-Groove rifling seems to work very well. I have run lead bullets through my 357 and 44 mag Marlins that have Micro Groove rifling and did not notice a HUGE accuracy drop off. There was difference but not tons. Especially for the close shooting on large targets that the Cowboy Action guys do.
