Good morning,
This very well could be my first post, i used to lurk, but havent had an ar for the last 3 years. I got a great deal on a S&W M&P15 sport. Its got an A2 rail and MBUS. I've already ordered the Nikon P223 3x32 scope, but im wondering if i need the special nikon rings. I have some nice hi rings that should work, but im just wondering why Nikon suggests their goofy offset rings. Will report back once glass arrives. Thanks in advance for any wisdom.

Many people find that in order to get proper eye relief the scope needs to be mounted farther forward than you can in normal rings (unless you want to mount it to the handguard). That's for ARs in general, not just Nikon scopes.

If you shoot NTCH, the hi rings might not work with the eye relief.

I bought Aeroprecision extended mounts for my scope and have it mounted as far forward as possible. But I see these are double the price of the Nikon rings.

The reason Nikon recommends their goofy offset rings is because they are a Nikon product. Generally any offset 1" scope mount will work.
