View Full Version : .45 Ammo Question...........

I'm going to buy a case of .45 ammo to essentially stock up with. I'm simply sitting on it as my personal surplus. I believe in ALWAYS having food for my guns, otherwise they're just very expensive paper weights. 1000 rounds minimum per caliber IMO.

This is not paper punching ammo.

What would you suggest would be a wise choice for this purpose? The .45's I own are a Beretta 8045, a P220 & an HK45 if that helps.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I would suggest reloading....

Winchester or Remington brass
230 grain Hornady XTP bullets
CCI 300 primer
7 grains of Power Pistol
1.23 OAL

830 fps from a 4.25 inch barrel...911 fps from a 5 inch barrel (just shy of a +P load)

That will give you pretty much the same performance as Hornady 230 grain TAP ammo...but that load of mine is VERY SLIGHTLY weaker than the factory +P Hornady load....

Or you could spend a shit load of $$$ and buy the Hornady factory loads.

My take: Federal Tactical Bonded or HST rounds if you have the $$$.

Whichever one of these is most reliable and accurate in your pistols and that you can get most readily:

.45 ACP:
Barnes XPB 185 gr JHP (copper bullet)

Federal HST 230 gr +P JHP (P45HST1)
Federal Tactical 230 gr JHP (LE45T1)
Speer Gold Dot 230 gr JHP
Winchester Ranger-T 230 gr JHP (RA45T)

A search for ".45" & "45" turned up nothing in the ammo forum.

Figured it wouldn't be putting anyone out too much to post what sort of .45 they recommend.

Regardless, thanks for the suggestions....and the link. Very informative stuff.

I wish Military .45 ammo was available like the 9mm is.

But I really don't believe in stock piling thousands of rounds of pistol ammo. I mean... I can't see being in a scenario where I'd be firing volumes of pistol rounds. If there's any high volume firing to be done, then it's rifle time.

Doc, glad to see that info is here as well as elsewhere.

any chance of you re-posting, or directing me to a link where it is posted, you rifle ammo information here somewhere as well? I know where I can find it elsewhere, but would prefer to direct others to a thread on this site.

Thanks.

Pat Rogers remarked this week, just as he did last year, that, "We suck at shooting pistol." He changed from 25 yards and in to 15 yards and in where to transition since many can't hit with pistol at 25 yards.

Stockpile pistol ammo before the price goes up to practice more with the pistol?

I've gone from a 1911 to a Glock 19 because I can shoot three rounds of WW white box for the cost of two rounds of .45ACP.

My pistol shooting has improved.

That's a valid reason to stockpile. But for Bug in or out, I don't think it's necessary.

I look at it like this.... What if right now, supplies to everything were cut off, and people were buggin in due to some natural disaster or something. Bulk pistol ammo is going to be of little value to me. Sure. You need some ammo, but the pistol is a secondary weapon which would see little if any firing.

I hear you. Just feel better with a respectable reserve of what my guns need.

Though I have scaled back a bit and will keep 500 rounds of .45 around rather than a full case.

Your perspective was influential....thanks.

I like the Federal HST line. Good performer and inexpensive. Allows me to train much more with my carry ammo! I carry it in both my 1911 and Glock, in .45 and 9mm.

Acquiring your duty/carry ammo in 1000 round increments makes good sense--shoot 500 or so rounds to ensure functioning and verify POA/POI, then use the remainder from the known lot as duty/carry ammo. It should last a good 5 years or so.

For what it's worth I do have over 500 rounds of Military ball 9mm in a 7.62 can, and I do keep several boxes of carry type ammo. More ammo is always good, but since space and money is limiting, I focus on the rifle.

You guys are correct on pistol ammo.....however.....you can never have too much ammo unless you are on fire!!
