Anyone have any experience with the Federal red box 62gr. FMJ ammo? Reliability, functioning, accuracy, etc....

While I am at it. Winchester white box M855 ammo as well. Thanks.

Generally AE 62 grain runs at a premium to the 55 grain stuff. So I never have bought any.

I'm not sure what White box M855 is. I've bought WIN M855 in white box before, but I think it was like 1996 production de linked SAW ammo. In any case, M855 is M855. (except for the foreign knock off crap)

Demi,

Thanks. I guess I better snap some of that Federal up while I can at the price. The Winchester stuff is being marketed as New factory M855 Milspec packaged in white (20) rd. boxes for 319.00 per case.

There is NEW WIN m855 out there. I know OMB police supply has it at some steep price. It could be in the white box packaging.

Demi,

ammunitiontogo.com has the Federal 62gr. for 249.00/ 500rds and the Winchester M855 is like 319.00/ 500. I just placed my order for the Federale!

Wideners is selling the PRVI 62-grain at around $350/1000 the last time I checked. I have not had a single issue with that ammo. YMMV.

Carlos,

After all the failures/malfunctions that we have had in country with that ammo I would never use it unless they were the last rounds on earth. Thanks for the tip though.

What about the PRIV M193? I know the M855 sucks hind tit, but M193 runs pretty good, and is much cheaper than the $9.96 per box of federal.

Demi,

Not sure. We only have M855 or PPU "equivalent" ammo here. I have never fired their M193 stuff. I would probably buy it to punch paper, but the Federal I just bought will be for "goblins". I opted for the 62gr. because of my ACOG and the fact that I zeroed my stuff in using M855.

Have you used the PPU M193 ammo? What are your thoughts?

The 04 production stuff was trash. Bad propellant. The current stuff is good. Runs in rifles and carbines, but the bullet doesn't frag according to some unofficial research by a member here.

XM193 is my bulk stash ammo of choice. That, and a splash of Q3131A.

AE 62 grain isn't going to be as hot as M855. So your zero may not hold perfect translation due to differing bullet flight. It shouldn't be a big variance, but since you'll have a small variance anyway, I'd opt for some Xm193 to get a full powered military round and good frag.

I just received 1k of Fed AE Fusion Soft Point.

I fired 20 rounds just to function test it and an new SF can - both were great.

I intend to chorno out of a 10.5 and a 18 and shoot for accuracy out of the 18 against BHP 75s and my home rolled 77's.

I'll post when done.

ps ammoman.com is cheaper if you are buying 1k rounds.

pss - mine are headstamped SPEER

Face,

That is where I got mine as well. Just wanted to see what the thoughts on it were especially from Doc. Thanks for your input.

Bump for Doc's thoughts too. I read unconfirmed reports that these were created for the Feds (ICE, IIRC) so I am hopeful that there was some thought and testing behind them.

I just ran a few boxes of new Win 855 through my new LMT 10.5 and it ran good. No issues. Small sample though. Maybe 100 rounds.

Update for Chrono info:

Temp 85 degrees / #s for SPR based on two (2) ten (10) rnd strings averaged together. SBR #s are one (1) ten (10) rnd sting.

AE 62 grn Fusion Soft Pnt / 18" Noveske SPR - 2,848 fps
BH 75 gn (Red Box) / 18" Noveske SPR - 2695 fps

AE 62 grn Fusion Soft Pnt / 10.5" LMT SBR - 2,426 fps
BH 75 grn (Red Box) / 10.5" LMT SBR - 2,319 fps

Accuracy notes on AE 62 grn from the SPR - unimpressive. I shot 2 groups of 5 both supressed and unsupressed at 100 and 2 groups of 5 at 200 supressed. It is 1.5 MOA ammo; 1 MOA for the best group (5 rnd supressed group @ 100). BH 75s were basically .8 MOA for both 100 and 200 while home rolled 77s were 0.6 MOA for 100 and 200.

Good luck
