I've had a few opinions on this on arfcom. Looking for any other feedback. I've put a deposit on these two rifles, trying to decide. Pro's and cons. Outside of optics and triggers, they'll both stay stock for a while. 6920 is $850 and 6940 is $1000, both have qualities that I like. What say you?

If those prices are brand new then very good deals. I would say the 6940 if you plan on keeping it stock and the 6920 if you plan on modifying it.

Do you ever plan on using a different rail? If so go with the 6920 otherwise your replacing the upper receiver on the 6940 to put a new rail on. If I were you I would go with a 6920 since there are more upgrade options later on. If you like the stock rail and monolithic upper then go with the 6940.

That's kind of what I thought, I'd imagine there will be a bunch of 6920's for sale with pretty good pricing near black friday. Really don't see how the 6940 could be priced any better.

I think the 6920 is a no brainer, I think what I'm looking for is someone that is pro 6940 and why. I know the rail is the deal but are there other reasons to favor the 6940 over the 6920? I know I'm making this more difficult than it is. This would be my first Colt, I have others. Matter of fact , there's a Spikes Middy that is also swaying my mind right now, I'm screwed up.

I have the 6940 and I'd say go with the 6920. I have no complaints at all on the 6940, but you'd best be happy with very short rail, etc because can't change it later. I don't think you can go "wrong" per se with the 6940 but my guess is for the serious AR person the cons may exceed the pros. It's cons no big deal to me and it was a trade.

6920 and add a BCM KMR 13. I have a Colt 6943 SBR, which has the same upper and rail as the 6940. The fore-end on the 694x models is too short for a 16" rifle.

The 6940 has a very short rail and you can't change it because it's one part with the upper.

The front sight is mounted to the gas block, and I've had issues mounting scopes because they'd bump up against it.

It's a very accurate rifle, but I hate the lack of customiziability, so I sold mine.

I would go 6920 also. I have a Magpul edition, and I like to keep it simple, plus if I want to do upgrades I can, but doubt I will. I just have a scope on it, and it is good to go.

The 6920 due to price alone. Though you can find some sharp discounts on the 6720 lately as well and that is the model I prefer, YMMV.

PSA has 6720 for 800 if you don't mind the light profile. But as others have said, if you're changing the rail, get the 6920.

Outside of barrel diameter , why the 6720 over the 6920?

That's the only real difference. FWIW, the 6720's my favorite factory Colt rifle (they've got one coming, according to SHOT, that may take that place though...).

Why is it your favorite ? and what's coming? I believe PSA still has them for $800

Until it gets really hot it's as accurate as any other Colt I own outside of the 6721 (but that one's free floated; mine is so it's a different animal) and it just seems to handle a little better.

I have several 6940 and 6920 series rifles. My preference is for the 6944 (14.5" barrel). I'm probably the only guy on the planet that doesn't feel like he needs a longer rail and likes the Colt OEM pinned fold down front sight. It seems to work for me.

As others have said, you can't go wrong with either choice.

Colt 6720 over both choices. PSA 799.99 is outstanding.

I just picked up the 6720 from Palmetto last week. It was $815 delivered and my FFL charged me $25. So $840 total was a great price.
