Ok, the more I search the more I am second guessing and questioning what I thought I knew. I want to build an AR Pistol with a 10.5 LMT Upper with an extended buffer tube & SB-15 arm brace. I have measured it all out and this set up is going to be 27" to the end of the barrel not including the muzzle break (not pinned or welded on). So as I understand it this will still be classified as a pistol. If I put an AFG on it but would this change the classification? So basically......

27" AR Pistol is still a pistol?

27" AR Pistol with AFG is still classified as a pistol?

Pistol only applies to a firearm 26" or less. If you put a VFG on a AR 'pistol' that is over 26" OAL then it is classified as a Firearm.

AR without a stock is a pistol.
>26" with a VFG is a firearm unless it is actually concealed, then it is an AOW.
<26" with a VFG is an AOW regardless of actually being concealed.
AFG does not change classification one way or another.

If it is classified as a "Firearm" it does not need to be registered with the ATF with a stamp and all that madness? An AOW however would need to be registered with the ATF correct?

A pistol is a pistol is a pistol- if it's barrel is less than 16 inches- no matter what it's overall length. A pistol may have a vertical fore grip if the overall length is at least 26 inches or so (I am not sure of the exact length) but it may not be concealed. The vertical fore grip does place the pistol in another category but the pistol also remains a pistol.

The AFG is legal on any pistol of any overall length

Don't forget to check your state laws.

I might've missed something but according to the links below, a VFG on an AR pistol is a no go but a Magpul AFG is fine. I didn't see anything regarding the OAL & whether the rules change depending if it's over or under 26".

This letter kind of clears up the confusion.
