In looking at a bunch of old military scopes you generally see external adjustments via the mount/base.

I understand that internal adjustments that were reliable/durable are a relatively recent development (Vietnam) but I'm wondering why that's inherently superior to an external adjustment system.

It seems to me that you could make an even more durable, reliable and quality optic at less replacement cost/weight if you reverted back to an external system.

Unless of course there is something inherently superior about internal adjustments. So I'm wondering if that's true. Does anyone have an answer?

Why are internal ballistic adjustments superior to external ones?
