View Full Version : Do you still buy Russian ammo? (If you ever did..)

I've been avoiding it because I don't want to support them or Vlad.

But it seems American shooters still buy it up en masse.

I will concede there aren't many alternatives when it comes to 5.45, 7.62x39,9x18 and 7.62x54. But people still buy it up in other calibers.

Your thoughts?

I haven't bought steel in a while, but just bought a case of Wolf Gold.

The only steel cased ammo I've been buying in the last year has been Hornady Steel match, and with recently buying a reloader I don't think i will be buying steel cased ammo just because I will want the brass for reloading. That said, not all steel cased ammo is Russian so if you are anti-russian ammo there are still other manufacturers of steel cased ammo that are not Russian. Granted, the mother company may still have ties to mother Russia, am not sure though since I am far from an expert on the issue.

I've run a lot of Tula 55gr through my BCMs in the last year or so... probably not very patriotic, but it's damn cheap and it's faster for me to run to Wal-mart that to reload the stuff.

IIRC Wolf Gold .223 is made in Taiwan.

Yes I do. I really don't care what Putin is doing to the extent that I would stop buying [potentially] Russian 7.62. The price difference is too hard to ignore.

Same here.

the 223 and 7.62 Tula ammo is stacking up at my local Walmart ammo shelves and I don't mind paying bottom dollar for cheap plinking ammo.

Competition benefits the consumer. When the US will start making the affordable ammo I will stop using Russian stuff. Unfortunately US is very good at removing the competition by banning the import and NOT by improving the quality or lowering the price. I am not trying to make this political but just watch.

I'm still buying the primers. They're too good to pass on.

Not since I sold my last AK 3-4 years ago...

With Tula being so cheap I always have 2k-3k 7.62x39 rounds on hand.. Can't be beat for the price.. It's cheap enough I can afford to shoot a few hundred rounds every time I go out

I was pleasantly surprised to see Wolf Gold 223 is made in Taiwan. But it seems to sell out fast under $300/1000 shipped. Should be some good holiday sales coming up.

I was wondering if there was any guilt about buying anything, especially gun-related items, from Russia. Mainly due to many shooters having a very negative opinion of V. Putin and others in the Russian gov't. (Which I share)

I guess there isn't any more now then there ever was.

I just paid $208 for a sealed 1000 round can of Tula 55gr at Walmart...

I ran it through my 10.5" MRP suppressed with a M4-2000 Mod 8 and I didn't have a single hiccup

Why would anyone pass that up just to pay $400-700 for "American Made" ammo? It's completely nonsensical

yes, both wolf and surplus- I care about politics but my checkbook doesn't

I buy wolf primers and steel cased .223. It's cheap and it works. I reload to save money, and I can't load .223 cheaper than I can buy steel case, and I don't have to pick up and prep brass!

Have gone through cases of Brown Bear for AK and SKS in the past few years. Always good stuff for a competitive price.

what sort of negative opinions do you speak against Putin?

When American companies start producing reasonably priced 7.62x54R, I will buy it. Until then, I will shoot surplus Russian ball.

Like Putin or not, he is not a candy ass like a lot of other world leaders.

I don't generally buy any steel case ammo, as I prefer to be able to reload the cases I shoot. That said, I have used a fair amount of Wolf and Brown Bear recently when I didn't have another viable option. No problem buying from Russia. Putin may be an a$$, but at the very least he's doing what's best for his country in an old-school imperialist sort of way.

I don't buy or shoot steel-cased ammo, either.

I recently shopped for 1,000 of brass-cased .223, and I paid $10-15 more to buy Prvi instead of Wolf Gold.

I didn't have any qualms about the origin or quality of the Wolf Gold (Made in Taiwan, AFAIK), but 1¢/round was worth it to me not to have people think I'm shooting "crap" ammo. Also the Prvi came in sealed battle packs...

That said, I just bought 10,000 Wolf LRPs. They were $22/1,000 at Brownells, which was too good to pass up...

I don't think I've bought any since 7N6 import was banned. The AR that I shoot the most is 5.45x39 so I'm glad I picked up a few crates before the import ban. I need to pick up some more 7.62x39 before too long and am thinking I'll get some M67 from Sportsman's Guide, even though it's not a company I like the price is right.

Do your homework. Putin is not the problem. He has been pushed and is pushing back.

Ill stop buying steel cased ammo when American companies stop trying rip people off. I mean really $400 for shitty XM ammo?

You're looking in the wrong places. And I actually won't buy Federal M193 when there are better choices like MagTech, PPU and others. Ammoman hads Fiocchi 62gr. FMJ for 329.00 delivered.

Ugh, the thought of running steel cased ammo is like nails on a chalkboard...unless it is a kalashnikov.

Thats what I mean, CBC(brazil), PPU(serbia),fiocci(italy) all produce a better product than an American XM193. Lake City XM ammo looks like its been through a cement mixer while being .40 cents a round and FC is either over priced or overpressured like Independence.

I haven't used any in rifles for a long time, with the exception of AK's and type guns, that I no longer have.

I still have it pistol calibers. Case material just doesn't seem important in pistol calibers. Low quality doesn't seem to matter as much either in pistols.

I run Wolf in my ARs and my M&P9 without any problems. Yes its dirty and may/may not induce more wear on the gun, but i can practice and train a lot more than if I was using brass :(

1K or wolf 223 is $240/1000 and brass is 330/1000. That $90 goes a long way in buying more ammo.

During Russian weather, I shoot Russian rifles. My Mosin Nagants go through a lot of ammunition during the winter months, so I will order more Russian ammunition when I find it at a good price. The American companies I purchase it from appreciate the business.

I avoid it when possible.

Screw Putin and the horse he was riding.

Sure - Commie ammo for Commie guns! The AK's gotta eat SOMETHING! ;)

I do. It's way cheaper and while it's still available it forces domestic makers to not raise prices as much as they would without the cheap foreign competition.

Hell yeah that's like stop buying American because of Obama! Russia is also in the right concerning many things I believe lately it our government that is trying to make them a bad guy. Malaysia is suing the Givernment of Ukraine ( Kiev) side as it was a Ukraine aircraft that shot down the airliner. As for Ukraine it was the EU and the U.S who supported the toppling of the Ukraines ELECTED government and now the people of Ukraine in the east don't want to support the Oligarchy that took over. We are in Syria a sovereign country for the beheading of some Americans but Russia can't be in Ukraine when Russians are being Napalmed that's BS. I say this a lot but if you don't trust our Government why would you trust what they say about Russia? Like when they say Russia is starting the Cold War BUT WERE SPYING ON EVERYONE even Allies. What worse is that our Government is spying on its own people and there are no riots against it....
