View Full Version : .308 Keymod rail options...

I'm going to be starting a new .308 build soon. I'm thinking of using one of the Aero Precision receiver sets and a 14.5" barrel. I thought about going with the 10.5" barrel but that seems almost pointless because I already have an 8" SBR in .300BLK. I already have an M&P10 (18" barrel) but I'm eager to try something a little shorter in .308 (and preferably lighter... The 10 is fairly light right out of the box but when you add a troy quad rail and optics it gets weighty quick). So I am think of a KeyMod style rail for this one and I was just wondering what options are currently available right now? I really like BCM's KMR and I already have an M4 with this rail, but I don't think they make it for a .308 yet. Same for Daniel Defense (my other favorite Keymod). So what's out there? Thanks.

There's also the Mega's but you have to buy their complete upper I think.

A note: this upper is incompatible with the Aero lower. See the angle at the rear of the receiver? The Aero has a curve there.

So the Aero Precision M5 Upper is a High Profile Upper, correct?

According to this store page, yes. High profile. I can't find it on the Aero site

Works with DPMS high profile handguards

Thanks for the replies so far... So basically there are no options for a "KMR-style" rail other than Mega's... And Mega's is only sold with their upper receiver which is only compatible with their proprietary lower receiver. That stinks. Maybe I'll just stick a quad rail on there until something better in Keymod comes along for .308 shooters.

Well you could go with a Troy rail to keep the weight down. I have a TRX on my MaTen

I have a Troy quad on my 18", and while it works and I like it... It's a bit heavy. And in all honesty I'm not a huge fan of Troy's rails. All the ones I've held just don't feel as good in the hand as the offerings from other companies.

I believe MI makes one that fits the DPMS uppers.

No - actually the CMMG will work as well - see earlier post.
It has a 5-star review from someone mounting it on an Aero M5 upper.
".........I just received this handguard for my Aero Precision M5 Build. The fit and finish is outstanding. There are no visible machine marks, and installation is super simple. It's also light. Not a beast like some handguards. Feels good in the hand too. ........"

If you're fine with just 3/6/9 keymod spots, the MI SS-Keymod rail sounds like the answer. They're really light, come in a variety of heights (as I understand, the LR308 height fits the API M5 uppers). I'd at least look into that.

I was really looking for something with the offset spots as well but it's not looking too promising.
Am I mistaken in that the new DPMS Gen IIs can use a regular AR rail?

Depending on what you want to mount and where, I don't see all that much utility in the 45' slots (with things like the RSA-QD, IWC Keymod Mounts, and rail mounted KAC 45' Offset sights I haven't ever seen a need for those offset rail portions - I wouldn't be able to run a laser unit on any of them, and for mounting lights there are offset mounting versions that can still mount the light in tighter than trying to direct mount to the keymod surface, and finally the control accessories never really make great use for those, so other than aesthetics I don't have a use for those offset spots. I'd love a KMR-308 or KAC URX4-7.62, but for the other merits of those handuguard systems, not the 7x keymod surfaces).
The Gen-II are designed to use AR15 height handguard solutions - whether the barrels/barrel nuts fit and are compatible with things like gas tubes and any handguard alignment tabs interfering with the upper is another question, but for my part I'm still looking rather intently at the DPMS Gen2 as an option if I can put an aftermarket Bartlein barrel on it and then just throw a KAC URX3.1 13.5" rail (which is easily my favorite handguard).

Thinking about trying one for my MP10. 11.8 ounces.

That's the rail that I run on my MP10, and I love it.
