So I am new to ars and just got a colt 6920 and was wondering about the 'break in period"??? Is it really necessary? Will it affect my rifle if I don't do it?

You "break in" a new rifle by shooting the piss out of it.

For a new rifle:
1. Disassemble, inspect and check for proper function.
2. Clean and lube
3. Shoot the piss out of it.
4. Repeat 1-3

Nope. Clean it. Lube it. Shoot it. Repeat. Some might offer another opinion but YMMV.

Shit! I started with 3. Does that void my warranty?

Colts shouldn't need a break-in period. They are well made. See Vicious_CB's post above.

No, but typically you want to clean the factory gunk out first.
