Picked up a floating shelf at the local gun show this past Saturday for concealing a rifle. Ive been wanting one for awhile after seeing what different companies have been offering. But prices are a little high for what some companies are offering quality wise or a waiting list over a month. But started talking to the owner from a company called NJ concealment furniture (I do not work for them or associated with them in any way other then a customer) and offered me one that had been used as a display for a great price that i couldn't pass up. I had planned on building one but unfortunately work loves to get in the way. Got to say he did a very good job building these. Only problem i had with this model is it was not deep enough. I run a streamlight polytac on a magpul mount and a redi-mag system which prevented it from closing. After about 2 hours of measuring and cutting i added a inch which solved the problem just need to paint it now. "Locking" mechanism is metal rod that slides back and forth controlled my a strong magnet located in a box picture frame. Obviously this is not a safe probably not something you want to show off to every tom dick and harry that walks into your door lol They do offer more secure locking methods for gun owners who have kids running around (which i do not). Whats every ones opinion on concealment furniture?

I made my own with the old book method, a band saw, and some glue.

Or something with as much exposure like...the internet, right?

Do toilets count as furniture? I recall reading a gun mag article in the 80s about someone who kept handgun in a waterproof bag in their toilet tank. I've always considered the idea, but don't trust any waterproof bags on the market enough to submerge a perfectly good gun in. So now I keep one of these on my shower caddy:

and a .45 under my towel every time I take a shower. Maybe a little paranoid, but better safe than sorry.

Well you're assuming that my firearms are always in there. i do have a safe some where else in the house. And if you know where i live come on over and bring your firearms. There is some pretty nice ranges in my neck of the woods.

Meh, just get a GLOCK and call it a day.

@Shao: Was probably gotten from watching The Godfather.

I always got a chuckle out of that bedside shotgun rack that used to be on late night shopping commercials.

I've seem the old "roll of film, bag of cocaine, handgun, passports, cash" inside a ziploc bag in the tank bit in many films/TV shows over the years.

This doesn't work in a ziplock. You end up with slimy pink stinky money.

OP, does the magnet just set ontop of the surface and you slide the whole box, or is the box stationary and you move the magnet within the box?

NEVER!!! I am about as anti-Glock as you can be. Not saying that it isn't a reliable weapon, I just can't stand the ergos and overall feeling of the weapon.

Oh yeah, that's right!!! I thought Jeff Cooper wrote about it. Maybe old age is setting in.

Well I definitely wouldn't trust it in a ziplock bag - it would have to be one of those fancy scuba diving, keep your char-cloth bone dry at 200M type bags.

I wanted something like a TacticalWall before they ever came out... well, at least since before I knew it existed a few years ago. I considered their price but although it looks purty it doesn't really save that much work/effort so I just made my own with scraps I had laying around including a floor standing mirror that was just taking up space. Turned out alright and didn't cost me much at all.

That's really cool. If you made them modular with different mirror/cabinet faces to both match your decor and throw off intruders, I'd be in. I think I may just have to try and build one myself. Good job.

Nobody even notices it so I think it works just fine. I get what you're saying about matching the mirror to our furniture but that's what I had so that's what I used.

That is impressive. However you want to keep the fingerprints always wiped down, they are kind of a clue.

Does the mirror have a latching mechanism to prevent it from inadvertently sliding open? And nicely done, may I add.

Was just thinking the same thing. It 'looks' like it could be done on this example by using the circle in the decor at the top of the frame.

@Moose-knuckle: I'm sure something similar has been done before as well, just meant that due to the popularity and therefore widespread audience of The Godfather, that it made the idea more 'mainstream'/well known is all, especially considering the time of Shao's remembering of reading about it in the 80's being in line with the movie's release and fame.

Fingerprints were after the install. It has since been wiped clean and is kept that way. I think we're over estimating the intelligence of the common criminal but I do try to keep at least one step ahead. If anyone ever found themselves inside of my house (a miracle in and of itself) I doubt they would ever even notice this mirror on the wall or think to look twice at it. The 60" LED hanging on the bedroom wall would likely garner most of the their attention I would guess with the safe in the closet (lag bolted to two walls and the floor from inside) being a close 2nd. Either way, they're going to be too busy with those to think about checking picture mirrors & such.

I used higher-end ball bearing slides that sort of 'lock' into place. It has detents that hold it pretty securely so it wouldn't inadvertently slide open. I use the work 'lock' very loosely as it's currently on no way locked. It uses the theory of hiding in plain sight as it's only means of protection but I plan to device some sort of magnetic locking mechanism at some point. I'm still not sure I like the looks of this mirror and may go with a different one anyway and don't want to put too much effort into making this fixture permanent until I decide.

LOL, I wouldn't know. But if I was in the business of hiding cash I wouldn't opt for the toilet tank as IMHO it's too obvious of a place.

I was being some what facetious. But yes, I'd trust a GLOCK if propertly stored in this particular situation.
