Damn right you will. Rush? ****ing Rush? How do you even but "best album" and Rush in the same sentence? The guys make my ears bleed.

Take it back. Take it back right now or I'm gonna burn this thread to the ground. :big_boss:

Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King. Although most releases were awesome up to Red.
Joe Vitale (A Local) - Roller Coaster Weekend. Was with Joe Walsh early to mid 70s, Barnstorm.
Glass Harp: Glass Harp. Phil Keaggy, one of the most underrated guitarists, finger style & electric hands down imho.

Godsmack.

Lol.
You know, as a Godsmack fan, you are right. The first album was the best. The other albums weren't bad, up to their latest, but nothing has reached the sound of the first. On a side note though, am going to go see Sully on his solo tour later this year.

Anyway, back on topic of the thread.
Drowning Pool's first album Sinner. Though that can be debated, since some consider it their ONLY album with Dave Williams dying before they ever released their second album.
Five Finger Death Punch: War is the Answer.
Shinedown: Leave a Whisper.

Damn, got beaten handily to this one, although their Hybrid Theory (when it was the band name) EP's are not as good.

I'll add:

Finger Eleven (Tip) - far and away better than before they got found and Paralyzer got badly overplayed
Flyleaf (Eponymous - Flyleaf) - I can listen to it end to end repeatedly, their new stuff barely can get through the singles
Evanescence (Fallen) - About the same as above, for a lot of the same reasons
A Perfect Circle (Mer de Noms) - I realize this isn't the only Maynard Keenan project, but another that came out of the gate the strongest it would ever be
Red (End of Silence) - Definitely their best album, though they've gone on to make a few other great songs
Adema (Eponymous - Adema) - although to me it's their only good album, it was the first and best
Sent By Ravens (Our Graceful Words) - massively underrated album IMO, not that their second one was remotely bad either

"Signals" by a long shot.

My nomination LL Cool J with "Radio", it was all downhill after that. But "Radio" was wall to wall incredible.

Between "Limelight" and "Tom Sawyer" they were one of my favorites. "Subdivisions" almost defined my generation.

Damn.forgot.

Don't know if it counts as "first album" but Eric Clapton's first solo album.
Same with Ozzy Osbourne first solo album. Randy Rhodes melted my face.
Boston
Randy Travis
A ton of stuff from shredders in the eighties and nineties.

Guns n Roses: Appetite for Destruction

Appetite was and still is the best rock album EVER. I still turn the station when Sweet Child or Paradise City comes on the radio due to the monumental overplay of those tracks, but numbers like Rocket Queen, and Nightrain are great to hear.

Is this a hipster thread?

That was my first thought :D

Rules for music snobs:

1) Shame the person if they like a band that anyone outside of their geographical area has heard of.

2) If you like the band they mention but don't want the disgrace of liking something that other people have heard of, claim they sold out or "went pop" after their first album (very essential if you're a metal snob).

Let's see, this is tough, because for me, I've tended to like the 2nd or 3rd albums of most bands; never planned it that way, but that's just the way it seems to work. Here's the few I can think of did their best in their debut; they've already been mentioned here, so I'm just putting in my agreement:

1) Evanescence: Fallen. The only album that was in the realm of gothic metal. Hardcore metal heads will threaten to tear your heart out and shove it up your ass if dare to categorize Evanescence as metal. If you ask why they're not metal, you'll get the biker gang answer: If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand. To them I say screw off, go back to making YouTube videos and disappointing your parents. I thought Fallen was a good album.

2) Linkin Park: Hybrid Theory. I listened to this one beginning to end I don't know how many times when I was in high school

3) Shinedown: Leave a Whisper. One of the few "post-grunge" bands that I like.

Umm...you all know that Moving Pictures was NOT Rush's first album...right?

Many bands do have fantastic debut albums that are edgy and better than their later works.

The Police's first album was mush stronger than their later more pop like fluffy stuff.

The Clash's debut was some of their best stuff...raw and had more attitude than later tries.

The Car's first album was also more creative than later tries.

Van Halen's debut was definitely more edgy and creative than the MTV fluff that came later on.

How about Boston's first album? Was there ever a better debut than this one?

Rush's first album was not nearly as good as later ones. Mostly because Neil Peart was not their drummer on the debut. Rush peaked with the Permanent Waves/Hemipsheres/Moving Pictures album range. That was about the best they ever did. Neil Peart wrote most of Rush's lyrics and was no doubt one of the best drummers in rock music history.

Aaaahhhh.......I was waiting for the Neal Peart "snobbery" to attempt to derail my assertion that Rush's first album was the best.

Yes, John Rutsey was just a drummer and Rush was the "poor man's Led Zeppelin" on their debut, but they still rocked harder with more concisely structured songs on that record.

(They also hadn't gone "more pop" yet to satisfy that snobbery).

Its not snobbery.

Rush's music and lyrics took to new heights with Peart coming on board...there is no doubt about it. Very, very few bands of that era had such complexity and depth to their music. The band simply did its best work later on - the more musically advanced stuff and songs with lyrics that were much better written than "Working Man" or anything on their debut album. Most of the lyrics from Rush's debut were no better than the junk that AC/DC put out.

Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson are amazing musicians in their own right but Peart really drove Rush's success. I don't know if they would have achieved the heights they did without him. It would be like The Police without Sting or The Cars without Ric O'Casek. Or...Van Halen without David Lee Roth. The music would have not been the same.

Neil Peart was an amazing talent...a rare gem that you don't see often. A true genius.

No snobbery...the man was just amazing and I am guessing I am not the only one that thought so.

I always thought everything after the first album was pretentious drivel, at least up to the Permanent Waves album. :D

The riffs on "Finding My Way", "Working Man", and even the slow parts of "Before and After" were to me as good as anything Zep or Deep Purple ever did.

I thought 2112 was sci-fi gobbledygook. What were they trying to do, become Pink Floyd?

Then again, I think Sgt. Pepper's is the Beatles' worst record, so maybe I'm the weird one. :jester:

My buddy had that album. I looked at Twisted Sister as a parody band. Almost Weird Al-esque.

Fallen was a great record for the time. Goth metal was sort of coming into the mainstream and Ben knew how to do it right. Problem is that after this record Amy and Ben had a falling out and Ben left the band. Since he was the actual architect of their sound and the writer, it was sort of done at that point.

Van Halen's debut was definitely more edgy and creative than the MTV fluff that came later on.

Though the first record is great, I think Fair Warning is where they got it right. And the Sammy years were more pop, but I think Balance is good record as well.

And GNR should have been the next coming, but they couldn't hold it together.

Ultimate shame and dishonor on all of you for allowing Van Halen's first, simply "Van Halen", to have to suffer the indignity of not being mentioned until post 22.

Minus 50; no 100 viking points from all of you. I'm disgusted...

Umm...I mentioned Van Halen's debut in the beginning! Hello. LOL

At the time Van Halen's debut came out...disco was at its height and album rock was a tad bland and predictable. The blazing riffs and drum work on that debut was refreshing and different and blazed a trail for guitarists for decades.

Van Halen, I was just blown away with how good this album is and it still holds up today !!
GNR Appetite for destruction is amazing
NIN, pretty hate machine. awesome album that a friend of mine got me listening to.
Boston, nothing more needs to be said
Ratt, out of the cellar. I don't count EP's as 1st albums.
Motley Crue, To fast for love. Even though I prefer shout at the devil it is a very close call between them for me.
People in the Orlando/Tampa area may have heard of the Genitorturers and the 1st album is pretty damn good. Gen used to do piercing in downtown Orlando
