Hi everyone,

Anyone have any experience with CMMG rifles to share?

Also, what is the logic behind the current rage for 18 inch barrels?

Thanks,

RCK

Can't give an opinion on their barrels. I think the SPR has an 18" barrel. Also it's about 20" long with a Phantom or Vortex.

I own a 16 inch 6.8mm upper assembly from CMMG. I have only put about 500 rounds through it and it has performed beautifully. I am getting some good results from Hornaday 110 gr. V-Max for me this combination is shooting within 2 1/2 inches at 200 yards. I will be testing some Silver State Armory 110 Pro Hunter Rounds tomorrow I'll let you know how they shoot.

I have a 11.5" 1x7 CMMG chrome lined bbl and it's run 100% in over 8K rounds.

I am not going over the CMMG thing again... but the SPR uses an 18" barrel based on the determination that 18" is the shortest barrel the 5.56 would perform out of for that application.

Unless you are shooting M262 Mod1 or have the shortened gas system designed for the 18" barrels, you may see some reliability problems with the system (cold weather).

Everyone wants one becasue... well... they are cool.

I have been saying this for a long time:

For a SBR - 12" with carbine (7.5) gas system
For a Carbine - 16" with Middy (9.5) gas system
For a Rifle - 20" with rifle (13.0) gas system

what are you saying? So what system is best for the 18" barrel? The intermediate, rifle, mid? I really dont get it, are you saying the 18" is no good with any of thaes? Can you be more specific?

SPR Special Purpose Rifle

CMMG's offering is unique, in that they offer an unfluted, 4150 Cr Moly, SPR profile, Cr lined bore & chamber ,mid length or rifle length gas system, and a 1 in 8 twist.

If you do a search here you will find quite a lot of information, and opinons on CMMG and their barrels...most of it based upon personal experience and well earned gunsmithing knowledge.

For most folks needs would likely be filled by either a 16" mid length or 20" rifle length....

Needs/wants vs marketing & popularity aside.

Unless of course you got a 'special purpose' in mind....:)

The 18" SPR may not be the best choice, but if you have to have an 18" barrel you would be better served with the mid-length gas system instead of the rifle length gas system.

Mid-length 18" would be best all around unless you shoot suppressed only, then a rifle length gas 18" would be fine too.

I have a CMMG 14.5" barrel that so far seems to be a very good choice, so I would imagine their 18" would be the same.
