View Full Version : Which is your favorite Glock 9mm?

Is it factory stock or some touches?

Mine is my G19 I got in 1994.
I did have to add an extended slide stop, extended mag release, a plug, and some night sights. Otherwise no mods.

When a buddy first showed me his 19 in the early 90s,
I was impressed with all that fire power of a Beretta 92 in such a small package.
Mine shot as close to POA as any pistol I have ever taken out of a box,
and was reliable,
without a single MF over the years that was not a dud round or one bad reload I had back in the late 90s.

It seemed like a perfect mix of full sized and compact all in one.
Could not have been happier with this purchase.

I got a 1996 G26 right around when they first came out. I have grown to hate the two finger grip, and the Gen 2.5 smooth finger grooves, etc. The base pad with the finger rest does not do it for me. The 19 mags with 26 spacers I feel move a ton in my hand when shooting.

It is not that it is not reliable, I just do not enjoy shooting it. At the time there was not a plethora of options with similar size and capacity and reliability in 9mm.

I finally got a 1997 G17.
The gen 2 is fine by me. I find the checkering, etc. adequate. I will finally get around to the 18 mag cut down. This is a factory night sight gun, I got it used for 420 bucks and assume it is a trade in. Some cosmetic wear but no evidence of high volume shooting.

I have plenty of other guns to put lights on.
Neither of these are in that niche for me.

My only issue with the cut down is I was going to have a couple of daughters use the 19 and 17 for Production.
Factory extended parts are great but a stickler could nix the cut down.

Overall I would have to say the 19 or a cut down 17 is what I find to be the ideal Glock 9mm.

I actually prefer the trigger on XDs I have tried,
but the availability of 9mm Glock magazines is hard to beat.

Is there anyone that likes or has grown to like their 26 and what was the deciding factor?

I could totally go for a 26 slide on a 19 frame I think.

Definitely the 19. I have one of each GEN 2, 3, & 4. Had at least one of all the models in the past, sometimes multipies of certain models. But by far the 19 is what does it for me. All are set up the same...Vickers slide/mag release, plug, smooth trigger, and Heinie Ledge sights.
If I had to pick one it would be my GEN 2 I bought new in '96.

My Gen2 G19 issued to me back in 1995. Runs like a top. I switched out the frame to a Gen3 frame a few years ago, which I had Boresight Solutions reduce and texture. Continues to run without a hitch to this day.
Vickers slide stop, Vickers magazine release, Vickers magazine floor plate, NY-1 trigger with the "-" connector and a grip plug. Recently added RedBack One/ 10-8 sights to finish it off....

If it's possible I actually have 2 favorite Glocks. The Gen4 guns fixed some of the personal issues I had, mainly being the grip angle. My Gen4 G19 is my go to carry gun for almost any occasion. I wish Glock would make a .45 in the same size as the 19. I'm convinced that is the perfect sized concealed carry gun.

In a different caliber I've learned to love my issued 21SF with the exception of the grip texture, but I can look past that. For me it is one of the best .45s in production today.

Gen 3 Glock 19....stippled, Vickers slide stop and mag catch, Ameriglo Idot sights.......love it! I have a gen 3 Glock 26 set up identically for Tshirt and shorts.

I can't say I have a favorite.

I love my G19 gen 3 but having fired gen 4's I found I really like it's features.

At some point I'd like to get a G26 gen4 and/or G33 gen4 for occasional pocket / backup use.

If I had to choose it would probably be a G19 gen4.

Edited because I just noticed the thread is about 9mm glocks!

Currently Gen 4 G17. Previously Gen2 G 17. I sold my Gen 2 to a buddy and have been trying to get it back ever since. Nothing at all wrong with the Gen 4, I just have some nostalgia with my first Glock.

Gen3 G17 RTF2 with gills. That's my go-to Glock.

ramairthree
12-02-14, 09:04
I get it.

17 does feel a tad better in the hand than 19.

The grippiness ang grip ergs of the new ones are a slight improvement for me, maybe huge to others on the gen 4s.

Obviously, the need for a light makes the jump to gen 3.

I would love to have seen a generation jump include more frame/slide compatibility,
with factory 19 lowers with 26 and 17/34 uppers.

For me the 17 to 19 grip is totally doable.

(the 17 in the picture has been cut down since)

It is the 19 to 26 grip that is my breaking point.

Gen 3 G19 with all releases extended, (small hand necessity) a Hogue Handall grip, plug, Ameriglo night sights, and a 3.5 lb Glock OEM connector.

With thousands of rounds through it, I've had one stovepipe. I'm sure it was because I got lazy and limp wristed it. It's never happened again.

I never leave home without it.

ramairthree

My hands are not small,
but I also find the ergos horrible without the extended mag release and slide release.

My 2nd gen G17 made in 1992 is still my favorite...although after Apex fixed my brass to face problems with the G19, the 3rd gen G19 is quickly becoming a favorite.

I don't think you can go wrong with a G19 or G17...really.

Gen4 Glock 19.

It has replaced the gen3 Glock 19 I have used since 1999. I have large hands and the large beaver tail back strap makes a huge difference for me with this gun.

ramairthree
12-02-14, 10:29
Yeah,
Don't get my wrong, I loved the 92/M9 when they first came out.

The G19 stole my heart in the early 90s.

I became a caliber snob in the mid 90s, and 10mm Smiths and double stack 45s stole my heart from the Glock 9mms.

After an injury, surgery, casts, etc. the big, heavy Beretta in 9mm became my go to again.

I am not up for the 10mms and .45s again yet,
but am sliding back into 9mm Glocks.

With the exception of sight preferences, extended mag release, and extended slide release,
I agree it is hard to go wrong with a Glock out of the box.

The Gen 4 issues really caught me by surprise though.

I am still a 2nd Gen guy, maybe about to dabble in a 3rd gen 34,
but still wary of the 4th Gens.

My lefty buddy went for one like a fat kid on cake though.

brickboy240
12-02-14, 11:58
Most of the hitches with the 4th gen Glock 9mms seem to have been solved.

Also remember that the earlier 3rd gen 9mm Glocks were also very good guns...as reliable as the 2nd gen 9mm Glocks.

I have also heard that the newer dual recoil spring set up in the 4th gen Glock 9mms makes for some soft shooting....something to consider if recoil is an issue.

QuickStrike
12-02-14, 12:06
I like my gen4 glock 19's the most. Both with apex extractors and one with White sound H.R.E.D extractor spring/plunger assembly.

The grip size fits my small hands better and the dual recoil spring seems to make them shoot a little bit flatter for me.

Hard to pick one! I would say my favorite all around is my 3rd gen 19, and probably a tie between it and my 3rd gen 34 for shooting fun. I kinda miss a 17, would like a 4th gen to play with. Been carrying my 19 every day for a long time now, it always delivers.

My favorite is a toss up between the 34 and the 19
For everything except concealed carry I love the 34. For concealed carry I love the 19.
The 34 is just plainly a great shooter and fits my somewhat large hands well.
The 19 is the best jack of all trades handgun out there if we are ignoring defense from large predators. It is about the shortest grip handgun I feel comfortable enough shooting with but it also has an impressive 15 round capacity. The barrel length is also in a sweet spot at about 4".

G19 Gen3. Carries well concealed and is fun at the range. I do agree the 17 points better, but for me is a little much to conceal. I also consider the 19 to be the best all around handgun.

G19s seen to get a lot of love, with very few having issues with that grip vs. the G17 grip.

I have seen a ton of cut down pictures, and have cut down a G17 myself.

I have not seen many pictures of dustcover extensions on G19s with a 17 or 34 slide.

I prefer my 19 grip to my cutdown grip. Not a huge difference, but enough. If I do another cut down it will be with the HK style, save some of the heel type.

Are many of you running G19L or G19XL vs. a cutdown G17?

Got to shoot a Glock 18, which I have to say was fun, intimidating, and really pretty much useless. The cyclic rate is crazy high and it would really benefit from a stock. I will say that on semi it was basically a recoiless system.
Other than that gun, I would say my favorite glock is a my 17 that has been chopped to a 19 grip. Excellent all around pistol.

Haven't gotten to try too many but I just picked up a G19 gen4 and I love it. I have a G17 and 26, both gen 3's, they're tied for second. Never tried any extended controls on any of them, I like the stock slide stops and the gen 4 mag release is great. The gen 3 mag release leaves a little to be desired, especially on my G26. Would like to get my hands on a gen 1 or 2 19 for the retro cool factor.

You cannot put a 34 or 17 slide on a 19 (and make it work right easily) because the locking blocks are not the same. The ones that are out there are essentially all aftermarket slides.

Glock 19 gen 3. I have 3 and going to add at least 2 more.

What on earth do you want to own 5 G19s for?

Because I can...

I have a carry 19, a 19 I keep in the closet by the front door, one I keep in the basement, a class/training gun, and a spare.

I own the main three 9MM's (26, 19, and 17). Guess if I had to live with only one, it will be the 19 Gen 4, like many others here.

But my 17 is my favorite shooting Glock by far...

Glock 26.

If I could only have one gun it would be a Glock 26. Why? Because I want to be armed as often as possible. Clearly the one gun must be a handgun because I'm not carrying a rifle/shotgun everywhere daily.

I find that the Glock 26 (I've had one since 2005) is small enough to conceal readily, even if I have to resort to ankle or smartcarry, yet large enough to offer solid capacity, shootability, and cartridge. It can also be extended in size/capacity with magazine baseplate extensions or by simply using larger magazines.

Second place goes to the Glock 19. But there are times I can reasonably conceal the 26 that I could not with the 19 so as a one and only it's out.

For those who own both Gen3 & Gen4 Glock 19s, is the spacing between the finger grooves different? I noticed the Gen4 has the same number of little dots between the finger grooves (4:4:4) but the Gen 3 has different number of rows of dots (2:3:2). I gave my father my Gen3 19 a while back, great gun but the finger grooves dug into my fingers (not sure what Glock was thinking) unlike then 17 & 26 and just wondering if Glock fixed this on the Gen4 compacts...

I don't notice a difference in the finger grooves, though I do have a rubber texture Talon grip on the Gen3

Are you a lefty?

Gen 4 scared me off.

I've bought 3 over the last 12 months (G21, G19, G17). I've put quite a few rounds through them all, particularly the 19 and 21. I am now totally comfortable with the Gen 4 Glocks and in fact, won't be buying any more Gen 3s. I believe that Glock has got the Gen 4 guns where they need to be. I wish you good luck and hope that you give Gen 4s another try.

Gen 4 G17.

Gen 3's are too blocky for my warrior-sized hands. Gen 4's are just right.

I have a G19 as well, but actually find it too small/short in the grip, which makes me wonder how/why guys with bigger hands seem to like the G19 so much.

I just wish Glock triggers were a little lighter, less squishy and more crisp, but it is what it is.

I got big hands as well. I could never warm up to the G19, grip is just to small and uncomfortable for me to shoot well. I run the 17 like a raped ape though.

Don't even worry. I have more than that and they all have a purpose.

I've found the same people that ask why do you need x number of G19s almost always have 2x number of defensive pistols. To me, Having 5 G19s makes much more sense than having a Glock, Sig, HK, Walther, and M&P

I might be content with 10 G19s. Maybe.

Currently my Gen4 17 in FDE is my favorite. I find it the easiest to shoot fast and accurate, hence why it is my IDPA gun. It is also my nightstand gun and wears a TLR1 HL.

If I could only have one Glock though for the rest of my life I'd take the 19, as it is more of a do-all gun than the larger 17.

I set them all up the same way; Ameriglo Pro I-dot sights, Vickers slide and mag release, Zev trigger spring and Ghost Ranger 4.5lb connector.

As for Gen3 vs. 4, I have both. I prefer the Gen4 due to my small hands being able to grasp the gun better and get to the mag/slide release quicker. I also find the texture to be better for sweaty palms. Pretty much all of the issues with the Gen4 guns have been resolved except for some reports that some are still not able to reliably run suppressors. I think the days of worrying about picking up a Gen4 are gone.

Try a 3.5# connector. IMO it makes a world of difference. If you don't like it you're only out about $20-25.

I was never a big fan of Glocks...just didn't like the grip angle and overall feel. Until that is I held one with some frame mods and it is now one of my favorites!

I'm running a Gen 3 17 with some grip reduction and pretty aggressive stippling. It's got Supressor height sights and the slide was milled by ATEi to accomodate an RM06. I had some of the internals polished up, through in a Zev Ti pin kit and extended mag release. Also added a Lone Wolf threaded barrel.

Been looking at some triggers but haven't decided on one yet...here it is;

After owning all of the 9's except the 17L, I have found that none of the other guns present substantial enough advantage over the G19 when it comes down to pushing the guns hard up against a timer and drills. I like the compactness of my 26, the "feel" and balance of the 17' and the speed and sight radius of the 34, but the 19 continues to work in an utterly predictable and forgiving manner, with no measurable advantage going to the other guns.

As far as generations, the Gen 2 seems to have the best quality parts and "feel". But again, under fire and pressure, the third gen and fourth gen perform better for me with the finger grooves. With the third gen requiring stippling or some sort of grip tape, the fourth gen simply has a better grip and mag release. All are in best form when configured as stock, except for quality night/low-light sights, butt-plug, and in the case of non-rtf frames, talon grips.

The Gen 4 G19 wins as #1 Glock. I'd trade my third gen in on one, but there are some advantages to keeping it as it holds some "grandfathered" status in my home state of CT.

I couldn't agree more.

Over the years, I have owned or had access to all of the 9mm Glocks, to include a 17L and a few minutes with the Glock 18.

It would depend on the size of the shooter's hands.

I have large palms with long fingers. Because of the size of my hands, the Gen4 Glock 19 with the large beaver tail is exactly what I have been needing all these years.

I sold my Glock 34 when I found that I didn't shoot it any better than my Glock 17. True that I had much more time with the Glock 17 that the 34, so that would explain why I preferred the balance and feel of the 17 over the 34.

While both the Glock 17 and 34 are great pistols, it is extremely difficult to find a single pistol that is as close to being able to handle all of a person's defensive needs as a Glock 19. Once the ejection and BTF issues got worked out, the texture and adjustability of grip sizes of the Gen4 guns over the Gen3 guns was enough to win me over and retire my Gen3 Glock 19 to the safe.

My first Gen4 Glock 19 was test fired on Halloween of 2013, and my second one was test fired in June of 2014. Both show no issues with ejection or BTF.

Now if Glock would finally come out with a compact single stack 9mm somewhere in the size range of the M&P Shield...

I'm not going to hold my breath for that to happen.
