View Full Version : Bond 24: SPECTRE . . .

So the 24th James Bond film was announced today . . .

Director Sam Mendes revealed the title at a launch event at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, where principal photography is due to begin on Monday.

Daniel Craig will play 007 for the fourth time in the film, to be released in the UK on 23 October 2015.

And OH HELL YEAH!

As previously reported, double Oscar winner Christoph Waltz will have a role in the film, playing a character called Oberhauser.

The name of the character is the same as that of Bond's former ski instructor, though it has been rumoured Waltz will really be playing Bond's old nemesis Ernst Stavro Blofeld.

I swear to God if this movie doesn't open with somebody whose face you can't see petting a white Turkish Angora cat they are wasting everybody's time...

When Casino Royale came out I thought they were going to have the organization behind Le Chiffre be SPECTER but no. We had to wait for movie#4 before we get what we had been wanting all along.

At least they didn't call it SMERSH...:jester:

Maybe Blofeld will be behind Quantum, since Quantum has kinda taken SPECTRE's place.

I thought the last one was pretty good- and I thought most people thought it was pretty good too. Maybe it just hit a note as the whole story line about 'old ships' having a usefulness all their own.

As a Bond aficionado I can tell you Skyfall rocked, his back story and all that. It was even cool that they killed off an "M".

And yes, I have had the same feeling about her since I saw her in the second Matrix movie!

I don't recall any other "M" ever being killed off in the films. IMHO I believe that Judy Dentch's died in the Skyfall Chapel at the hand of her former protégé.

Great sounding cast all around.

Long time Bond fan here. I was a fan of Skyfall, and really liked the Bond back-story and the way they wound the film into the older Bond lineage.

As an aside, recently Goldfinger came on so I tried sharing my love of Bond movies with my young daughters. Well, that didn't last long. Try explaining the old Bond treatment of women, sacking up regularly, etc. with your young kids. Yikes. Gonna have to shelf that for later!

I haven't seen a Bond film since Timoty Dalton starred. I can't watch one and take it SERIOUSLY, with chicks (technically, 'old biddies') starring as "M" & "Q." :fie:

I'm waiting for the NEXT generation Bond - Benedict Cumberbatch - starring Mark Gatiss as "M," and Simon Pegg as "Q." THAT... will be a Bond WORTH watching!

Thankfully, there's still seasons 4 & 5 at a minimum, of "SHERLOCK!" in the interim.

Q isn't a woman. Q has never been a woman. In fact, until Skyfall and with the exception of John Cleese, there hadn't been a Q since Desmond Llewelyn died.

I, for one, never minded Dame Judi Dench as M. In fact, she's my favorite M. But then, the first Bond film I can recall seeing was GoldenEye, so.... (And Xenia Onatopp/Famke Janssen is still my favorite Bond bad girl, too.)

ETA: I don't see Benedict Cumberbatch as Bond. Ever. Not that I dislike the guy, but I feel like he's going to be stuck in roles where he plays the skinny dude with the commanding voice, no matter what. Now, Idris Elba, on the other hand....

Nor do I, Cumberbatch just doesn't have the look for Flemming's "blunt instrument". I've read rumors that Alba is being considered for the role in future installments. Personally I've always wanted to see Clive Owen play bond but he will be too old once Craig hangs up the tuxedo.

And as for Sherlock, no one . . . and I mean NO ONE could ever hope to play Doyle's sleuth more admirably than the late Jeremy Brett.

For all the Monica Belluci fans check out Irreversible. She first caught my eye in the matrix reloaded and then again in tears of the sun. It wasn't until recently did I watch Irreversible...movie is seriously demented and her rape scene is very graphic. IIRC the guy who played the rapist is her husband or boyfriend or something.

I'm kind of meh about all the bond films Bond, I do like how they made daniel Craig's bond more of a "Jason Bourne" type bad ass.

I own the Bond 50 blue ray box set and have watched them all in order, it really gives you a perspective to watch them that way. I'm still looking for the "unofficial" non Ion Productions Bond film Never Say Never Again starring Sir Sean Connery on blu ray, I've see it a dozen times on TV/VHS/DVD.

And yes Skyfall is one of the best Bonds ever. Sir Roger Moore even said that he thought it was THE BEST Bond yet.

That is correct, both Connery's Never Say Never Again (remake of Thunderball) made more at the box office at the time than Moore's Octopussy. After the fiasco Ion Production's legal team buttoned things up so there would be no more "unofficial" Bond films.

Craig said in an interview that they had to go that direction due to the Mike Myer's Austin Powers trilogy. This is why they are only now returning to super villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld and SPECTRE.

I don't remember where I read but someone posed the question, what if all the bond films took place in the same world, one timeline, one universe. Yet every actor who played Bond was in fact separate James Bonds. The name "James Bond" is just a code name in the same sense that 007 is. No JB is actually named James Bond. It's a code name to protect the true identities and family's of said JB.

I thought it was interesting. Just a thought I found interesting. Made it more enjoyable for me to think of it that way to keep it alive for another 50.

Interesting but I don't think that is what Fleming had in mind. I haven't read the novels/cannon but in Thunderball all the double 0's were assembled for a meeting with "M" and The Home Secretary. IIRC that is the only time we see all of the '00' agents at one time.

Not what Fleming had I mind no, neither the movie studios, just a little fun theory that explains Bonds different personalities from each of the actors that played him. A flawed theory, that forces those who want to believe it to give some leeway. It's a fun thing to think about. Not meant to be cannon, just some fun to be had. Also explains how we went from a less serious Bond to a strictly SF guy that we currently have, or to a black Bond in I. Alba.

IMO I think Alba is the perfect person to play Bond, Daniel Craig is amazing. I think they are gonna have to start fresh with the next actor and reinvented the whole thing, and Alba is where I see that happening. They should hurry though to make that happen, he isn't getting younger. Following Daniel Craig is gonna be tough. I think Alba is a great actor and I would like to see him play Jon Stewart in a new Green Lantern. Although he's already attached to Marvel so slim to none on that happening.

Going to watch it today.

I caught an interview with Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes Director Thursday night on the Charlie Rose show. The film took over 2 years for production. Craig blew his knee out in a fight scene and will be down for six months after ACL surgery. He didn't make any promises, but seemed open to taking-up the role again after a vacation.

I hope he does because he has done a great job as James Bond.

I saw it. Not as good as Casino Royale or Skyfall. Probably about as good as Quantum (which I thought was OK).

Awesome guns. Some HK and Walther Action. Bond takes some pretty impressive pistol shots, LOL (you will see). His criticism of Moneypenny missing the IMPOSSIBLE shot on top of the train in Skyfall will make more sense after you see his shot.

Fantastic cars.

Amazing action scenes (the helicopter fight was awesome for me)

Too long, but overall a good flick. It actually seemed a bit Roger Moorey but in a good way.

As in previous movies, HK is "bad guy choice". All VP9s are taken from bad guys. But bad guys have also taste for Arsenal Firearms 2011A1. But I do not think that 2x11.43mm is equal in result to 23mm round :)

I thought it was a great film. The finale in Skyfall is tough to top, but I believe the movie held its own. Like others said, great scenery including various locations around the world, amazing cars, and some very lovely ladies.

Definitely worth watching if you enjoyed the other Daniel Craig Bond films.

I too saw it last night and I enjoyed it. I liked all the nods to previous Bond films.

The big Spectre meeting was a nod to a similar scene in Thunderball. The resort in the Alps was a nod to On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and the train was straight outta From Russia With Love.

The part that really got me though was Bond carrying his PPK on a Galco Sto-n-go....really? REALLY?

For me Spectre had a niche for touching back with bits and pieces from across the Bond continuum. I remember watching all of the original Bond movies at theaters starting in 1962 with Dr. No. Tying all of Craig's villains together with a central organization was a nice closing touch. As previously mentioned, the resort in the snowy mountains made one think of, "On Her Majestie's Secret Service" and the train sequence was right out of, "From Russia with Love". I liked Craig as Bond. He brought the same charisma and no bullshit fight scenes as Sean Connery. Several of the Moore, Dalton, and Bronson movies looked like re-hashes of the original Sean Connery movies. If they continue the Bond movie franchise, while the Bond character still needs to be a suave, womanizing, kickass secret agent, its time to come up with new, unique, story lines.

Okay so I had essentially my own private screening tonight, had the theater all to myself. . .

This is what made me love Spectre is they paid homage to so many of the other Bond films but Sam Mendez pulled off with out being cliche.

In the opening titles we see flashbacks of all of Craig's Bond films, they did the same with the opening titles of On Her Majesty's Secret Service. The scene where they are taken to Blofeld's lair they are given separate rooms and she is given an Asian inspired dress just like in Dr. No, yup the clinic in the Alps is straight our of On Her Majesty's Secret Service too, train scene with Dave Bautista mirrored Robert Shaw in From Russia With Love. And loved the Spectre meeting straight out of Thunderball!

Speaking of Dave Bautista, the beast stole every scene he was in, man that first scene of his. A modern Oddjob! The fight scene on the train is IMHO the most intense yet, I mean I really thought he was going to kill Bond there for a minute that is how realistic it was. Yeah I know it's Bond and he always wins but damn that scene was convincing.

We find out Blofeld's origin story and he has his signature suits, Persian cat, and secret lair in a meteor crater.
Judi Dench has a cameo.
And by God even the original DB5 has a cameo!!!
The plot ties up nicely all the other plots and villains from Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, and Skyfall. This was a big thing for me at least.
And finally Mr. White is dead.

Impressive list of small arms used in the film, my favorite being the SA Vz.58 compact assault rifle!

Reality chases fiction. (Peoples) European Commissar Dimitris Avramopulos (he is co-sponsor of EU wide semi-auto firearms confiscation law adopted yesterday) proposed... one, integrated intelligence agency for whole EU. Should we call him "C"?

I will be going to see Spectre tomorrow. As a Bond fan and also action movie fan, I go to see it for the shoot 'em up, guns, girls, Omega watches and other connections to older Bond adventures. If the story is weak or the acting is sub par, unrealistic, that's fine, just going for the entertainment, it's a movie.

It was a good movie. I hope that you enjoy it Sam.

I have seen it myself and will be going to watch it again in I-Max. As a Bond fan I really liked it.

Odd man out here. I left early.

Just my take, but I think the "Strike Back" episodes were better all around.

There is some Omega porn in there for sure.

I thought it was really good. Casino Royale and Skyfall were still better, but Spectre did the Bond franchise proud IMO. It's also great to see that Monica Bellucci has still got it past age 50!

It wasn't bad, but nowhere near as good as Casino Royale, Craig's best.

Another thing that I rather enjoyed is the scene where Blofeld's chauffeur picks up Bond in a Rolls Royce Phantom III, the same model that Goldfinger hid his gold in and smuggled out of the UK. Really cool to see them nod their hat at all the classic Bond films like that and none of it took away from the film.

Yeah, it seemed like they gave a nod to all the Conery films (with the exception of Diamonds are forever) and OHMSS(which the studio originally wanted Conery to do) I didn't see anything from the campy Roger Moore ones.

Saw it tonight, I liked it, liked it a lot. I don't compare it to Skyfall, Quantum or Casino Royale. It stands alone by itself. Enjoyable, entertaining, loved the scene where he received the new watch from Q and the scene on the train when he showed Madeline the P226. At least half the theater gave it an applause at the end.

Good thing too as the Roger Moore films are the worst IMHO, he even admits this and has stated that Skyfall was the best Bond film ever and Craig is the best Bond.

Here's some trivia, after Connery turned down the role of OHMSS Albert Broccoli offered the role to Clint Eastwood who turned it down stating that whoever plays Bond should be British.

She stole that scene, I really like Bond's comment afterwards "Well we just skip over the hand to hand now" or something like that lol.
