Simply put, the Internet is awash with opposing opinions on this. So, I put the question to this body of knowledge. Are they necessary? Or not?

the way I see it is Glock dose it for a reason so I would say, yes they are necessary if you don't want it to crack.

I own a 1990s manufactured G17 Gen 2 that started developing cracks, then once the relief cuts were completed the problem was solved. If it is a collectible I would leave as it is to retain value. However, if it is being shot regularly then have the cuts completed.

What relief cuts....where? Does the Gen3 already have these relief cuts from the factory? How about the Gen4?

Can someone post a pic of what everyone is talking about?

On Glock frames, there are two circular "cuts" just rear of the locking block. Anyone familiar with engineering knows there's quite a bit of stress concentration at sharp corners, so a fillet radius helps to distribute this stress over a larger area. You see the same thing on Beretta's revised locking blocks.

I've got an old Gen 2 Glock 19 that was made in 91 or 92 with no relief cuts. How much does Glock charge to add the relief cuts?

I don't think they add them. I think they will do a frame swap for you.

They add them. I just sent in a gen 2 and it came back with the cuts.

Edit to add - GLOCK believes they are necessary. I agree with SkiDevil; if it's going to be a shooter get them done or if you want GLOCK can upgrade your frame to a gen 3 at no additional cost.

Agree.

Using fillets in high stress areas are good fundamental engineering practice.

OP, I'd have Glock fix it up for you if you can live without your pistol for a week or two.
