Guys, I have a 300WM that I just don't like the stock. I think the cheek is too bulky or something. But every time I get down on it, I am not happy happy happy. I have rested my melon on a AICS1.5 and liked it pretty good. I like my McMillians and Manners light but I have those.

I was thinking of one of the new AICS or the new PSR Remmy stock or something like that. What aftermaket stock do you like for your custom builds?

Edit: I guess it doesn't matter what rifle it's for if it's custom.

I personally am not picky at all when it comes to stocks, but I like HS Precision-type stocks. Fat part for my hand to rest on and tall for a good cheekweld. Everything else is irrelevant to me, which saves me tons of money.

Please let us know what stock you decide on and your impressions of it. I have a 300WM that needs rebarreled and I had been planning on putting a different stock on as well (winter projects). I like the looks of the different AI chasis but have no physical experience with them.

My gun is a 300 WM, Remmy Trued action, Pacific bolt, Badger Bottom metal,Timney Trigger, Kreiger Barrel 1/10 , Thunderbeast can, NF ACTAR scope. I shoot 208 AMAX in Markm reloads.(RWS brass and 75g? H1000 powder, win lrg rifle primer) I have taken it to 1400. I have not been able to find a Mile range yet.

Take a look at the XLR chassis.

my fav is the sentinel because the forearm is super low profile and it is rounded and comfy like a manners/mcmillan. great on barricades and prone.

and you can move the cheek piece laterally to put your eyeball right behind the scope (though you can also get terry's hardware to add this on manners or mcmillan)

they look pretty schnazzy too

i've had 4 rifles with them. 3 left handed and 1 right. 1 templar by george at GAP (top pic), 1 surgeon by terry cross (who makes the sentinel stock), 1 bighorn by robert gradous and 1 bighorn by wade stuteville. it's definitely my fav stock, though like anything, it has some room for improvement.
-if you use a harris bipod, you'll need a riser or the range of tilt will be limited due to the profile of the forearm. the larue QD is a good fix, but it adds a bit of elevation, which may or may not be desired
-the finger groove is a mild irritant
-the large flat on the bottom of the forearm that slopes up is great for traditional HP standing position but makes it harder to push into barricades. the sniper skid plate solves the problem though.
-flush cups on the rear are too high. wish they were in the middle or bottom
-bottom metal has a smaller opening for the trigger than standard r700 so if you get the x-treme trigger, you will have to dremel a 1/4" off the trigger rod to make it fit.

when you stick your thumb through it and hold it like a pistol grip, it is super comfortable. when shooting slow, i like it, but it really interferes with the way i like to run the bolt, so i just run my thumb along the side like i do manners/mcmillan

overall though, it's as good as they get and you can get it with a block, like the manners mini chassis so no skim bedding required

the NV mount is very low profile as well

Your post explains the issue I have with my current stock. The cheek piece is so bulky, I have trouble getting eyeball centered. I never heard of the lateral adjustment. It validates why I don't like it. Every other cheek weld I have is more rounded. The HS precision is very squared off. I even talked to Mark about shaving that sucker down.

Thanks for the post, it all just came together.

Sweet guns by the way. Very sweet!

Although my favorite hunting stocks are Manners MCS-TA's, when I build another it will be with Gary Elisio's stock. It mimics the adjust-ability of an AR and gets your face way down in your line of sight. Check Competitionshootingstuff.com

This is my "new stock". The cheek piece was my main issue. I hated the contour, so I had it curved down a bit, then Markm threw a great rattle can job.

We will throttle this bad boy tomorrow. It feels completely different. The SMALLEST things makes the biggest difference. 20 minutes on a sander...

i can't tell from the pic. so you sanded your existing stock down so you could move your head farther right?

looking forward to the range report tomorrow

Taliv,

Yea. The cheek riser was like a 2X4 per se. I just smoothed the contour more like 90% of all cheek molds. Whether it be a riser or just the stock on a regular hunting gun. Normally the are contoured to fit your face. If you are so inclined, if you look on Stockys Stock at the medalist tactical, you can kinda see it. I'm sure some people find it great, but for those that shoot a lot, these little things matter.

I just can't emphasize enough how much I hated that stock based on that one deviation. So I have layed my head on it and it feels much better., but the bullet will let me know tomorrow.
