Has one of these large cartridges pulled clearly ahead of the others?

458, 450 Bushmaster, 50 BW?

It seems to me that all of them being available has screwed up the market.

Don't know but I chose .450 bm because there is ammo available for it.

Midway has two 450 loads ($31.50 and up - Hornady and Remington)), six 458 Socom (all same brand, and $64 and up), seven 50 BW ($27 and up and only AA).

To me that looks like 450 wins - as two major makers make ammo, and 458 has nothing under $64 a box.

You must have moved up to nuclear hog hunting.

This is not going to make a hill of beans to folks who buy factory ammo, but the 458 SOCOM was never about factory ammo. That was always the blindspot.

It was always about taking 458 rifle projectiles and getting them handloaded to your specs. They tried but Corbon was not sold on it, and Starline couldn't be convinced to keep the production of brass up, even though we bought something like 50,000+ pieces with custom headstamp and everything.

At the time, 458 rifle projectiles seemed better than 45 Colt projectiles, but 454 helped make a lot of expanding pistol projectiles.

50 BW uses 7.62x39mm bolts, which is a plus compared to the 450 and 458.

450 is 9 round capacity. The 458 and 50 are 10 rounds.

This is why none is clearly best. Each one does something better than the other two.

If there were a clear winner I probably would have bought one at some point. I do like my 44 Magnum Winchester Trapper.

Home defense from bears? Sure.

5.56 would be plenty capable with 20 more rounds in the same form factor for bipeds.
