View Full Version : Does the P228 have 2 recoil spring diameters?

I recently picked up 2 x P228s- a West German and a German:

I picked up mags/ SRT/ new recoil springs for them, and it appears that the guide rod is too fat to go in the middle of the spring... not just the retaining curl at the end, but each coil is much too tight to even slide on, let alone allow for any movement. This is for both pistols.

There is also a pretty big difference in the length/ number of coils:

The bags are marked P228, and I know the new P228ish gun is a P229...

What's the consensus?

Do I have the wrong part? Should I force it on and blast?

Any advice is appreciated...

I know of no change in spring diameters.

Please describe the springs in the lower pic. Top spring appears to have 15 links versus 12 in the lower. Which is the original? Which is the new?

I suspect the new spring is actually for the "new" current production P228[9].

Why are you replacing springs already. The condition of your P228s look pristine, like they've hardly been fired. Have they just been well cared for or refinished?

The new one is the longer one. You can sort of tell from the picture that it is smaller in diameter.

The designation for the new P228ish gun is P229.

The bag says "Spring, Recoil, P228" and is a new part.

OMGoodness... they're absolutely thrashed!

They're Israeli Army surplus and both rattle like maracas. No reliability issues thus far, but I can "punch" the gun and get the slide to unlock... very weak springs.

Also as a test I checked the new springs against a P225/P6 guide rod and they are also too small.

Interesting, the pistols must have been refinished or reconditioned somewhat judging by the pics.

I'd call SIG and give them your P228's serial number. They should acknowledge the discrepancy and send you out the correct springs at no cost to you. This new spring is clearly for the "new" P228. What a mess they created.

Original folded slide P228s are a sweet spot for SIG.

Excellent pistols overall.

It's the same stuff that comes on all the recent Israeli milsurps. You'd swear it's park, but the frame is aluminum.

I got a nice Pre-B CZ-75 in the same order and was really digging the rough, gray finish, but they didn't remove (or move) the safety!

Apparently it's spray on.

No, the new P228ish gun is called the P229 (above). There is also one with the new SS slide called M11.

I had a new P228R and I think it used the same old P228 parts.

My P228/P225 spring has 12 coils. My P226 spring (9mm) has 15 coils.

Forget talking about the P229. That's a different model with two different springs depending on caliber and just confuses this subject.

I believe SIG merely put the wrong springs in P228 packaging. I didn't measure the diameters but the longer P226 spring was smaller in diameter.

Interesting!

It would appear that you are correct:

(Yeah... I probably should have tried that before starting this thread)

I guess I wasn't the only person having this problem either:
