View Full Version : Rotating Stock Into Better Ammo, what to buy?

So, I've got a fairly large quantity of 55 and 62 grain NATO stashed. I've been rotating stock, shooting older ammo and keeping newer, but now I want to begin rotating in some slightly better ammo.

I was thinking of buying some CBC mk262 clone, IMI mk262, and/or some Hornady TAP either FPD or 5.56 (If I can find it). I would be using it for HD and maybe precision shooting. And I'll be keeping it for several years.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Sgammo.com usually has good AR ammo reasonably priced, if you keep checking back...

I've shot several 3" groups at 200 yards from a bench with this stuff...

Also, the Hornady Superperformance give good long range accuracy from my basic, CFH 16" BCM. But I'm just a regular Joe shooter, so YMMV.

Any of those are monumentally better than what you have. You're on the right track for sure.

I have different suggestions for different ranges.

I don't. The beauty of the 75/77 otms is that they perform good out of short and long barrels and at close and long ranges.

The only time I don't think the heavy OTM is best is when someone wants a good barrier buster.

This link went to the list of all 223-556 ammo. But I like your suggestion of the SuperPerformance ammo.

If I may ask... what rifle.. IE gas system, barrel length, twist.

And what brand is your 55gr and 62gr ?

The ammo is for general HD, but let's say REECE 16" rifles mostly 1/7 and 1/8 twist and a couple of 14.5" mid-length. I currently have primarily 62 grain M855 mostly Federal LC with some PMC M855 and a little CBC 62gr 5.56. 55gr is mostly Federal M193, but I also have some PMC M193 and other stuff. I mainly keep NATO loads. Although I have been sucked in to a couple cases of Wolf Gold and PMC .223 for plinking practice.

I don't care about absolute accuracy or I would hand load.

MarkM - Would you have any specific recommendations? I'd also like to get the best bang for my buck, but it needs to be ammo that can be stored several years and I'd prefer NATO loads. Any thoughts.

Black Hills Mk262 or any of the numerous 5.56 77gr OTM clones out there.

CBC 77 grain (Mk 262 clone). It's good stuff.

Thanks everyone. Looks like there is no consensus. I'll buy some CBC bulk because it's pretty cheap and I'll buy some boxes of other stuff to try them out.

I'd try CBC... just based on reputation and use from guys I know here. I've not actually shot it since I load at home, but if it were my money, it'd be CBC.
