Markm-Out of curiosity, if you were if you were going to bulk load 55 grain plinkers with a ball powder, which one would you use? The seemingly constant stream of TAC single pounders has me tempted to start grabbing one per payday like they were PMAGS or something...

TAC worked great for me for a long time. You can load it mild at 24.5 or hot if you like. CFE is nice too. But I haven't seen 8 lbs of powder for $149 in a long time.

TAC works great for me with 55gr Hornady FMJ's. The 8lb's of TAC at Widener's comes out to $18.63/lb... that's cheeaapppp. Even with shipping and the hazmat fee, it's still cheaper than buying it by the pound.

I know it. If you partnered with a buddy and got two 8s, it'd be even better.

Tac is great for the heavies if that's what you shoot in .223. Great success in 8mm Mauser also. Real close
to burn rate of 4895, so can't wait to load some for the Garand.

I might know someone that did that.

And I snagged 6 pounds of Winchester 231 last week as well.

I miss WIN 231.

That's the meanest thing I think I've ever seen you post. [emoji1]

I had 3 lbs left and gave one to a buddy this week that had been out for a year, because I felt bad. I have not seen it locally now for close to 1-1/2 years. I am on a ton of notify lists, but I never respond quickly enough. Damn the luck.

This comment got me curious, and searched through my email history. In 2007 Powder Valley had a sale on TAC 8 pounders.

$78

You must be joking. I have said much meaner things than that.

Actually, I'm splitting it with my pistol sensei.

Actually, either this thread or my generosity toward my friend created a ripple in the force and I stumbled upon 6 lbs of Power Pistol Saturday afternoon. Biggest score I've made in quite some time. I was pretty pumped.

That is excellent news, karma appears to have paid off for you. I truly hope we are starting to turn the corner on powder availability. Brass came back, then projectiles, then primers.

I just hope that we are all able to stock up this year. I have money set aside for about 8 years of powder, and I'd like to spend it before 2016

Damn, that's cheaper than what I was buying WC844 ($90/8lb) back in '09.

Despite being gone already, it's nice to hear there's TAC on the shelves every once in a while for a reasonable price.

Bought two jugs at $180/8lb at my local GS a couple months back and was happy to do so since it'd been vanquished from the shelves for soo long.

Wow - that 2007 Powder Valley price is why I started using TAC! About out of my hoard of IMR and ready to go back to TAC again.

I back-ordered 3 eight-pounders of TAC from Graf's in Summer '13... During the rush.

I was impressed that it only took a couple months of being backordered (it shipped in Nov. '13).

I can't remember what I paid per jug, but it worked out to $476 total, with HazMat and shipping, so less than $159 per 8lbs.

What velocities were those mild 24.5 grain loads getting you? I stopped by the LGS and bought a pound today...If it goes well, I'll start grabbing a pound everytime I pass that way, and I'll save my dwindling stock of H322 for SMKs.

I can't remember exactly.... probably high 2800s out of a 20 inch barrel. Back then I was just trying to stretch resources for blaster ammo.

I tried that load and didn't have any luck. Chronoed at 10 rd average of 2858 fps out of a 20" barrel with 24.5 gr of tac with CCI #41, hornady 55 gr fmj, coal 2.220". I was getting 6 to 8 moa all in a vertical string. This was with mixed brass and light crimp.

Just a suggestion, but there might be something wrong in your loading process. A vertical string is typically a velocity variance between rounds. 6-8moa is A LOT.

I'll have to give it a try and see how it looks. That big of a vertical string seems interesting, to say the least. Even my less accurate 55 FMJ plinking loads have been under 3MOA, though I may have simply gotten lucky with where I ended up.

I've been loading/shooting TAC 24.5gr, 55gr Hornady FMJ, Wolf/Tula SRM primers, and COL of ~2.25" for several years. I have found it to be very accurate and have not had any vertical string issues. I don't have my reloading notebook in front of me but I don't think my velocities were that high.

The reason I got away from that nice load was that my POI differed when I went back to Defensive/Full powered ammo.... That... and I kind went all extruded powder.

The variance wasn't that big on the chrono, maybe + or - 30 fps max. Tac burns better on the hi side versus on the low end of the loading chart. That was with my 20 inch barrel.
What was weird with the 16 inch barrel was I had 6 to 8 Moa but just random all over the target. Where factory federal ammo was shooting one and a half Moa out of the gun. I did not chrono the 16 inch barrel.

My experience has been with DD and Bravo 16" barrels and 11.5" Bravo barrel. Even if it's just the load with that barrel, that seems really unusual.

I grabbed 2 jugs from MidSouth for $145 each. Lots of the big names get the same powders at the same time. So when one sells out you might get lucky and find it somewhere else.
