Would this be considered an acceptable grease to use on slide rails and other parts that rub? I ask as I have rebuilt a couple of axle bearings and I have a lot of this left over and I am looking for ways to use it.

I would say its pretty heavy grease, try it and find out.

Frank Proctor was touting some Lucas oil gun lubricant the other day, it says pretty tacky.

It might be a bit thick, but for sliding parts with metal on metal, I'm sure it will work if applied lightly.

Grant Cunningham has a couple good articles on lubrication and firearms on his blog. They have been posted elsewhere in this forum, but here is his original BLOG in case you've not seen them:

Use lightly and sparingly with a thin coat it should do fine.

Just because I like this quote...

IME an NLGI #0 is as heavy as I like to go.

Oil is better.

From my experience, Tacky #2 is for 70 degrees or higher only.

Parts man at the local John Deere store showed me a synthetic grease he uses on his M1 Garand, M1-A1 and the semi auto 8mm Mauser, I think it is an FN-49 rifle.
The grease is Clear, stays where you put it and does not run off when heated from sustained firing.
