View Full Version : Did I screw up?

I completed my first build recently. It's an FDE build with a 10" Troy rail. About 1/2" of the gas block sticks out beyond the end of the rail. Is this a big deal? Should I pony up for a 12" rail to replace it? One problem is I probably won't be doing anymore FDE builds and I don't use barrels with a carbine length gas port so I doubt I would find any use for the rail I replace.

You should be fine. The Mk12's the military used have the entire gas block just beyond the end of the rail.

As long as the look doesn't bother you it will function fine. Exposed gas block will burn your hand, keep that in mind.

Not a problem at all.

The only issue I see is the potential for putting your fingers on the gas block or barrel, but that depends on how long your arms are, how you hold your gun, etc. Me, I manage to burn my fingers on just about anything possible when I'm shooting and moving, in weird positions, etc.

Or, you can just wear gloves all the time. I don't always, hence my preference for longer handguards.

For the most part an aesthetics issue...if it bothers you enough, then swap it out and sell the shorter rail...you should get a good portion of your money back.

Yea, it's fine. Just don't touch it. Did that once on my 516... once.

The first one I built did the same thing. Except I actually did that intentionally because I liked the front of the gas block peeking out. I later revised that upper and went to a 12" rail for a different reason, though. You will be fine; shoot it and enjoy.

OP, only you can answer your question.

I'll second the burn thing. I had always read to practice with gloves on, but I never did. I shot a friends FSB Socom II and managed to touch that freaking thing every time I moved. Now keep in mind I shoot a SBR 95% of the time and have T-rex arms, but I have now just started shooting with gloves at least once a range trip. It's going to depend on you.

OP, only you can answer your question. I don't mind too much how it looks I just didn't know if it was advisable.
