“The Purple Heart’s strict eligibility criteria had prevented us from awarding it to victims of the horrific attack at Fort Hood,” Army Secretary McHugh explained, adding:
Now that Congress has changed the criteria, we believe there is sufficient reason to allow these men and women to be awarded and recognized with either the Purple Heart or, in the case of civilians, the Defense of Freedom Medal. It’s an appropriate recognition of their service and sacrifice.
Very cool. These days, you are never out of danger.
About damn time!
Now if only they would change the official classification of the incident itself.
I'm glad they're getting it. Was the status of the incident changed from "workplace violence" as a result?
Did the guys wounded/killed by that traitor POS just before the Iraq invasion get the Purple Heart? He was a Muslim convert. I think his name was Hassan too.
ETA: His name was Hasan Akbar.
Would be nice if they'd also go ahead and re-instate 2nd Ammendment Rights on base.... you know, since there are actually legitimate threats out there these days...

Took this long for the Purple Hearts to be awarded yet the muslim who committed the murders is still alive getting 3 squares a day and TV.

Yep, if they would correctly term it "enemy action" you wouldn't NEED to change the eligibility criteria.

I don't think they should be called victims, they were wounded Soldiers and DA Civilian casualties of war.
Calling them "victims' somehow deminishes the act to a crime rather than an act of terror and part of an ongoing war.
Islam just brought it to Fort Hood.
A Purple Heart, while appropriate, is a poor substitute after the fact for having sidearms to defend themselves at the time. Those who decided they should be unarmed should be hanged.

But if everyone on base had a handgun, to say nothing of access to a rifle, somebody could just start shooting up the place and everyone would be helpless to stop it and....oh wait.
